Aswan High Dam

Manteqet As Sad Al Aali, Aswan

The Basics

Short tours of the Aswan High Dam include stops at viewpoints and information on the dam’s construction. Since the dam is on the way from Aswan to the Temple of Isis at Philae, many tours visit both attractions. The Aswan High Dam was a collaboration between Egypt and the former Soviet Union—on the western end of the dam, you’ll find a monument to the two countries’ relationship.

Aswan tour ( the temple of philae - high dam )
A very nice and quick tour around assuan. We had a lovely guide who had a lot of stories to tell. The driver was also nice, but towards the end a bit stressed, i don‘t know why… All in all definetly recommended tour!

Aswan: Guided Tour to High Dam, The Obelisk & Philae Temple by Motorboat
Wonderful!! Aida was super helpful and kind in explaining everything in Aswan's tour. the Obelisk ties very well with Luxor's history as well so it's a nice connection, if you're a history nerd/buff/geek.

Temple of Philae - A must visit in Aswan!

Aswan tour ( the temple of philae - high dam )
We organised a visit to the Temple of Philae and Aswan High Dam with Mina because we had half a day in Aswan at the end of our Nile cruise. Mina was very responsive and accommodating, even when we changed our pick-up location very close to the time of our tour. Mina's associate Rami accompanied us on the tour, and he was very knowlegeable and theatrical, which was definitely entertaining for us! He took the time to show us around the Temple of Philae - this place is a must visit in Aswan! At the end of our tour we were dropped off at our destination of choice bang on time as requested. At no point did we feel we were being rushed - we also enjoyed the boat ride to the Temple.

Aswan Day Tour Visiting Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk and High Dam in Aswan
Mary was a great tour guide. She was very nice and accommodating and did a great job with practicing a Covid safe tour. Would definitely recommend her. We needed to get a PCR test to come back home and she took us to the facility and then waited 30 minutes with us to make sure everything went smoothly. She was great and we would highly recommend.

Aswan Day Tour Visiting Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk and High Dam in Aswan
Peter guided us through the Unfinished Obelisk, the High Dam and the Philae Temple. He's a great guide, and he answered all our (numerous) questions.. He did his best to accommodate our wishes, and we really recommend him! The car was comfy and clean and the driver wrote very safely!

Aswan Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk, and High Dam Private Half-Day Tour
We had 3 different tours during our trip to Egypt, and this was by far our favourite! Big Mac was an absolute pleasure - larger than life, incredibly knowledgable, and very funny. He met us at our hotel with the driver, and we set off for the High Dam (via the old dam). Then, off to Philae temple, which was stunning - so many periods of history covered in one place, and situated on its own island. We made the mistake of grabbing a drink at the temple cafe (twice the price compared to elsewhere in Egypt) and would recommend to others to re-hydrate using the water provided by the tour guide instead. Little things made the trip special - e.g. rather than just giving us water, which was standard with these tours regardless of provider, Big Mac also grabbed us a fizzy drink. He also tailored the trip - asking us whether we wanted to go to an alabaster workshop, essence workshop, etc and did not bat an eyelash when we asked to skip that portion! It felt like we were never under pressure to buy anything we didn't want to, which was very refreshing. 10/10 - our favourite tour of the holiday and absolutely worth the money.

Aswan Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk, and High Dam Private Half-Day Tour
We had a wonderful tour with Hani our guide. We opted to skip the High Dam and that was not a problem for them. The van was comfortable with AC and our guide kept us in the shade for explanations of the sites and gave us ample free time to walk around and take it all in. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Aswan Day Tour Visiting Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk And High Dam
My tour guide was a real pro! He lives in the area and knows everyone, moves freely picking up drinks tickets or whatever you need. He constantly is talking history, reason for historical events and recommendations of what to do next. "So let's really plan your Egyptian tour, so you see everything and more."

Aswan: Guided Tour to High Dam, The Obelisk & Philae Temple by Motorboat
Very well organized. Karim was super friendly and knowledgeable with very good German. He managed to bring history to life, especially in Philae Temple. One of the best guides we had in Egypt. Would absolutely do a tour with him again. We asked to be dropped off at the bazaar at the end instead of the hotel (which was much further) but this was no problem at all.

Private day tour to Philae temple-unfinished obelisk and high dam in Aswan
In all, our tour was wonderful. Our tour guide Maggie was wonderful and very informative. The High Dam might not be the biggest dam in the world, but to see the artificial lake in the middle of the desert was just stunning. The Philae Temple is beautiful. The boat ride was short but a nice experience. The Unfinished obelisk is a different story. By itself, it might not be very attractive (that would explained why not all tours offer it) but in the context of human history-around 1508-1458 BC, it is simply amazing.

Great Tour! Nermien is an Amazing Guide!!

Aswan Day Tour Visiting Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk and High Dam in Aswan
I would really recommend this tour. I enjoyed every stop, especially Philae which was definitely one of the most memorable places that we visited in Egypt. I don't think I'll ever forget the first moment I caught a glimpse of the temple from the motorboat which took us to the island. I also have to say that we only had two really good guides whilst visiting Egypt (and we went on a lot of tours!) and Nermien was one of them. She never made us feel rushed, she was so knowledgeable and most importantly, she is a really nice person. I feel like this was one of the tours that I really learnt something whilst having a great time. I can still tell the difference between depictions of Hathor and Isis! :) I would definitely recommend this tour and especially Nermien. thanks :)

Aswan High Dam Versus Aswan Low Dam

It’s easy to mix up these two Aswan landmarks—here’s how to keep them straight. The Aswan High Dam is located south of Aswan, dividing the Nile River from Lake Nasser. The Aswan Low Dam is north of the city, and is an older, much smaller structure visible from the Luxor–Aswan Road.
