Amphawa Floating Market

Amphawa District, Samut Songkram, Amphawa, Thailand, 75110

The Basics

One of the best ways to explore the market and its surrounding canals is aboard traditional long-tail wooden boats. A typical cruise on the Mae Klong river (Mae Khlong river) and through the market takes visitors past several of the area’s Thai Buddhist temples, and can be combined with a visit to a local zoo, the nearby Maeklong Railway Market, or the chance to watch fireflies light up the riverbanks at dusk. The Amphawa Floating Market is a popular place not only for shopping, but for eating too, with waterside seating providing the ideal setting for a lazy lunch. Thai food such as dried pork, shrimp, shellfish, and crab are all prepared and cooked aboard the boats before being handed up to diners on the elevated banks on both sides of the river.

Enjoyed it with a baby

Amphawa Floating & Maeklong Railway Train Market Small Group Tour
A long day with a few highlights including the market itself and the amazing selection of food on offer. It's also doable with a baby, although travelling time is long. Our guide Jacky did an amazing job to point out all the interesting stuff, he was really knowledgeable and also helped us with our baby stroller on many occasions. We missed the floating boats, since they only come to the market around the weekend days. The firefly watching boat ride we would skip next time, it's not so exciting.

Private Excursion to MaeKlong railway and Amphawa Floating Markets
I want to send a big thank to our tour guide Tam, he has been very attentive and helpful all the way, we are traveling with 2 toddlers and he carry them whenever the road is rough! He arranged water and bought us snacks all the way. The tour was nice, I would like to spend more time at the floating market though. Overall very enjoyable trip.

Amphawa Floating Market Tour with Maeklong Railway Market (Multi Languages)
highly recommended , this is a must tour while visiting bangkok , the whole experience of the maeklong railway track market and the train passing through it is simply amazing , however i would like to mention that a more appropriate place must be identified for viewing the passing of the train , the tour guide must be more aware of this and the tour company should look into this specifically ... we couldn't get a good spot but still worth the experience. The amphawa floating market experience was also amazing ,, the river side boats with restaurants on it and seating for food .. the boat ride itself around the island .. worth the money and time ...

It’s a lovely way to spend the day

Amphawa Floating & Maeklong Railway Train Market Small Group Tour
So my review is really about the tour itself and the execution. I would rate them 5 stars, efficient and our tour leader Oum was lovely, obviously has a passion for what he does. What can be improved is post booking communication, being left without a word till 8pm the night before is not really very helpful. We tried every contact available email, phone, etc in vain (the phone number is some Hong Kong disconnected line) it’s the online chat team that told us to wait till 8pm the night before the tour. If this is the system then maybe inform your guests that they will receive instructions then. Now the “train market” is a disappointment, not the organiser’s fault at all, it is the nature of the market itself. It is set up to attract tourists, the market itself is lovely and you will get a glimpse of Thai lifestyle and even get to sample some yummy food, however once the train comes it’s chaos and you are stuck is a sea of tourists and their mobile phones, so set your expectations. The floating market and the fireflies boat ride are definitely the highlight of the day.

How to Get There

Minibuses run between Victory Monument in Bangkok and Amphawa throughout the day, but the most convenient way to visit is as part of a guided tour with return transportation included.

When to Get There

The Amphawa Floating Market is at its liveliest in the afternoon, beginning around 1pm. If you’d rather avoid the crowds, you can still get a sense of what the market is like in the morning, though not everything will be open.

Wat Bang Kung

Many visitors to the floating market overlook the area’s many interesting temples, most notably Wat Bang Kung. This Buddhist temple just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Mae Klong river (Mae Khlong river) sits ensconced within a banyan tree, making it particularly serene and photogenic. Some boat tours of the market also include a stop at the temple.
