The Basics

CaixaForum is a hidden gem in Barcelona, often overlooked but worth the visit for modern art lovers. Museum visitors can purchase a single admission ticket or opt for a multi-attraction pass, which includes admission and skip-the-line access to CaixaForum, as well as other attractions like the Picasso Museum, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, and the Joan Miró Foundation. CaixaForum is a stop on the Red Route of the Barcelona hop-on hop-off bus.

What a value for the money. We got into several sites for free and discounts on others. Barcelona is so beautiful and clean I am very impressed. We almost ran ourselves ragged to see as much as possible but loved every minute of it. The Egyptian Museum was one of my favorites. I wish everyone could experience this fabulous city and country.

We found the Barcelona cards very useful. We took the metro to every part of the city, sometimes several times in a day, and having the cards was much more convenient than having to buy individual tickets for every trip. The trains are clean and not too crowded most of the time. We also saved on tickets for several museums.

Barcelona card was very valuable particularly in taking the sub-ways which were clean and easy to use. Definitely the best way to get around the city. Also appreciated discounts on museums and other tourist sights. Card was easy to pick up at the airport information office upon arrival. Overall, a good investment for touring a wonderful city.

Room and staff service at the senator spa hotel were very good. Friendly and attentive service at reception. Easy walk to Collblanc Metro with chance to pick up light breakfast en route out and vino/ tit-bits in the Spar shop near the Metro on the way back Barcelona itself needs no personal review.

All 27 members of our club who joined this trip thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Barcelona, which is a very interesting city. The guide book was very useful, but it was inconvenient to have to collect it from the central tourist office. It would have been better to receive the guide book in advance, so that we could plan our itineraries ahead on a short visit. I was also surprised that the free use of public transport did not include the guided tour buses round the city.

Modernisme Architecture

The CaixaForum building itself is as impressive as the collection within it. The former clothing factory designed by Puig I Cadafalch in 1910 stands opposite the stylish Mies van der Rohe pavilion. Resembling a modernist castle with its intricate crenellated brickwork, the dramatic building now features a striking metal and glass canopy frontage designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki.
