The Basics

A visit to the Chiang Mai National Museum is an excellent way to kick off a visit to Chiang Mai, as it offers an orientation to the city from prehistoric times through the 20th century. After a 2017 renovation, many of the museum’s displays now include English explanations. Despite its excellent collection and recent updates, the museum lies a bit off the beaten tourist path. Only a few sightseeing tours stop there, often with other hidden gems such as the Somphet Market and Lanna Architecture Center.
