Golden Temple (Wat Phra That Doi Kham)
With its ancient chedi, impressive Buddha statues, and panoramic views of the city from its elevated vantage point, Golden Mountain Temple (Wat Phra That Doi Kham) makes for a pleasant, more peaceful alternative to the popular Wat Phra That Doi Suthep nearby. Some temple tours of Chiang Mai include Wat Phra That Doi Kham, as well as Wat Umong, Wat Suan Dok, and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. If you’d like to visit the temple with a bit more flexibility, consider booking a private, customized tour for the day.

Admission to the temple grounds is free, but donations are accepted.
How to Get There
Golden Mountain Temple (Wat Phra That Doi Kham) is located on top of a mountain situated approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) southwest of Chiang Mai city. The site sits just north of Royal Park Ratchaphruek, and the easiest way to reach it is to either rent a motorcycle or book a round-trip taxi ride.
When to Get There
The temple is open daily from 6am to 5pm. Plan to visit on a clear day (preferably during the cool months between November and mid-February), when you can make the most of the outdoor areas and surrounding mountain trails.
The Chedi of Wat Phra That Doi Kham
Built in the year 687, the oldest structure within the complex is its golden chedi, which shares a number of features with the chedi of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep farther north. It had long been abandoned when, in 1966, local villagers discovered a hidden chamber when the chedi collapsed during heavy rainfall. A number of Buddha images were found inside, and funds were raised to restore the chedi.
