Museum of Croatian War of Independence (Homeland War Museum)
The Basics
During the war, Croatian troops found refuge at the fort, which was itself the scene of fierce fighting; its stone walls are pockmarked with bullet holes and fire damage. Inside the stark interior, four hard-hitting exhibitions on the Croatian War of Independence and related Balkan conflicts feature TV news reels, recorded interviews with eyewitnesses, war maps, weaponry, and a collection of war photographs. The aftermath and regional recovery also are covered.
A large stone cross and a memorial plaque bearing the names of soldiers who died defending Dubrovnik both are located nearby. After visiting the museum, climb to the top of the fort for views over the red roofs and ancient city walls of Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum just offshore.
Things to Know Before You Go
Most displays are well-labeled in English.
Several exhibits contain graphic wartime images that may be upsetting for some visitors, especially children.
Reduced admission prices are offered for children’s tickets.
The museum is not accessible to wheelchairs or strollers.
How to Get There
The museum is located at the top of the cable car up Mount Srđ and also can be reached by a steep hiking path requiring a moderate fitness level. The lower cable car station is five minutes from the Buža Street exit of the city walls.

When to Get There
The museum is open daily from morning to late afternoon, with extended hours from late March to early November.
From the Top of Mount Srđ
Mount Srđ, which towers over the ancient city from the northeast, offers the best views in Dubrovnik and makes a popular nature escape just outside the old city walls. Hiking trails give different perspectives on the Adriatic coastline, while guided off-road all-terrain vehicle safaris venture further afield into the forested Dalmatian countryside.
