Laguna Grande

Laguna Grande, Fajardo

The Basics

Visitors can set the water aglow and create a trail of light with every stroke of their paddles during guided nighttime kayaking tours. Trips are usually offered around the cycles of the moon, timed to the darkest nights. Some tours also combine kayaking with an afternoon nature walk to La Mina Falls in the nearby El Yunque National Forest.

There are only a handful of places in the world where bioluminescent plankton is consistently found, three of which are in Puerto Rico. In addition to Lagunda Grande, this natural phenomenon exists in Mosquito Bay on Vieques Island and the bay at La Parguera. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is surrounded by red mangrove trees, which are native to the surrounding El Yunque rain forest and provide vitamin B12 to the marine plankton.

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour 8:00pm | Laguna Grande, Fajardo
Rafael, Emily, AJ, and others were great tour guides. Make sure to ask questions about the glowing organisms! You’ll get the most glow when the tour guides provide a tarp to block the surrounding light pollution. We also saw a lot of glow on the kayak route back!

Very cool kayaking through the jungle in the dark …the bioluminescence part was just ok you couldn’t really see it glow like the pictures but you saw something

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour in Laguna Grande Fajardo
It was fun, but could be better. Kayaks should be better lit and have a mounted red lamp on the bow…one person in each kayak should have been a red light headlamp. Also, obstacles could easily be marked without affecting the ecosystem. There are points where you’re paddling nearly blind. We had fun and would still recommend this tour!

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour 8:00pm | Laguna Grande, Fajardo
The whole crew (led by Thalia, AJ, Michael, Emily and I'm sure I'm missing someone, sorry!) were great! They made our trip memorable. I want to give a special shout-out to Emily for being super patient with us (we were at the back) and she guided/lighted our way back because my son was scared of the dark. Thank you. Awesome time and crew. Definitely recommend.

Laguna Grande- Bio Bay Night Kayaking with Round Trip Transport
Very friendly and well planned. It was a nice dark evening and they gave us tarp to see the phytoplankton better too. The night kayak ride was really lovely, recommend it.

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour 8:00pm | Laguna Grande, Fajardo
Peniel Access Eco Tours Biobay Night Kayaking had amazing staff that did their best to give us an excellent experience! The tour guides Rafael and Emily were an absolute delight. The tour was very exciting and informative. They did awesome considering that Hurricane Maria damaged trees that were covering light fog so they improvised to make it darker so we can see some dinoflagellates. The man at check-in (Avilio I believe?) made us feel welcome and ecstatic to be there.

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour in Laguna Grande Fajardo
Fun and unique experience. Tour guides did well, despite weather. Rained on us multiple times, but no one but God has control over that. Had to use the tarp to get dark enough to see the lit up plankton, but they were certainly there. Very cool to experience. Would recommend this to any visitors. But hopefully the weather would be more cooperative.

Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayaking Tour 8:00pm | Laguna Grande, Fajardo
Rafael, AJ, & Carlos were great hosts on 7/12/21. We took the 900pm excursion. We really enjoyed the family friendly tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Kayak tours typically navigate through a tunnel of mangrove trees before reaching the glowing waters.

  • Swimming in the bay is not allowed; you can swim and snorkel in the bay at La Parguera.

  • Guides will sometimes bring a cover so that the tour group can observe the bioluminescence in complete darkness without starlight.

How to Get There

Laguna Grande is located in the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, just off the shores of Fajardo, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) or an hour’s drive east of Old San Juan. Tours typically depart from San Juan or Luquillo, which is 9 miles (15 kilometers) away.

When to Get There

Kayaking trips frequently set out in the early evening around sunset, launching from Las Cabezas with a tour guide or instructor. The best time to experience the bioluminescent bay is when the sky is especially dark due to little or no moonlight, so try to book your tour around a new moon and avoid days surrounding a full moon.

El Yunque Rain Forest

Sometimes coupled with a tour of the bioluminescent bay, a visit to El Yunque Rain Forest is a must-do for nature lovers visiting Puerto Rico. It is the only tropical rain forest in the United States Forest Service and features well-defined walking trails, lush landscapes, and plenty of wildlife such as the Puerto Rican parrot and the Coqui frog.
