The Basics

Loch Ness is most often visited during day trips from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen that incorporate other Highlands attractions such as Urquhart Castle, Stirling Castle, Caledonian Canal, Glencoe, Rannoch Moor, Cairngorms National Park, and even Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

Shorter half-day trips, which typically include boat tours on the lake, typically depart from Inverness, while cruise-ship passengers can take shore excursions from Invergordon. Motorized boat trips are the most common way for visitors to scour Nessie’s lair, though it’s also possible to paddle a canoe or kayak out on the loch, or even take a self-guided cycling trip.

A great day
Our guide Duncan was the best part of a great day! The tour was 12 hours well spent, but Duncan’s love of Scotland and professor level knowledge of Scottish history was so amazing. The only detractor was 1 hour in Loch Ness isn’t enough time to explore and get lunch. This is obviously not Rabbie’s Tours fault as many of the restaurants were not serving food when we got there

Glencoe, Ben Nevis and Loch Ness Day Tour from Edinburgh
Thomas was great fun and gave us lots of information and my fellow travellers were very friendly. It was my first day of retirement and visiting Glencoe was a big tick off my bucket list-stunningly beautiful! Loved the boat trip on Loch Ness-again lots of information given.

Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands Small-Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
Desmond our driver and guide put together a wonderfully entertaining trip by providing historical, cultural, and local references to his talks. Because of the distance involved you cannot spend too much time at any particular stop usually 15 to 20 minutes although you do have an hour and a half stop when you get to Fort Augustus/Loch Ness. The trip offers magnificent views of the high country and gives you a good sense for what life would be like living there.

Glencoe, Ben Nevis and Loch Ness Day Tour from Edinburgh
This was a great tour, the tour guide (Callum) was amazing. Despite not being able to go to Loch Ness due to an accident, he took us to different places to make up for the time and told us lots of different stories. Tour also proposed to refund the money, so good company

Had a great time on the Loch Ness/Glencoe day trip. The weather wasn’t perfect, but Mark’s commentary & driving made all in my party comfortable. Historical information was coupled with jokes making the whole day truly enjoyable. I highly recommend this for small parties and solo travelers.

Loch Ness, Glencoe & The Highlands Day Trip from Edinburgh
The bus ride was long, but our guide, Gary, was wonderful. He was informative and funny. The HIghlands are amazing. Glencoe is beautiful. LochNess was magical. We stopped for a quick lunch, then continuted on to LochNess, where we opted for touring the castle ruins and the 30-minute boat ride on LochNess. It was perfect. On the way back, we stopped for some whiskey ice cream. It was delicious. We really enjoyed the trip and highly recommend it.

Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands Day Trip from Glasgow
I really liked the day trip to Loch Ness, Glen Coe and Urquhart Castle. Our tour guide, Robert, was very friendly. I would suggest to add 1-2 additional stops (10-15minutes each) in the highlands especially the viewpoints.

Fantastic tour to search for Nessie from Edinburgh.

Loch Ness and the Highlands Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
Euan our tour guide and bus driver was full of knowledge of the area and associated that knowledge with factual and date specific historical significant stories. Euan knew exactly what time and roads to take so that we met the loch Ness boat with sufficient time to search for Nessie. About the only very minor negative was we did not get to see sterling castle (this was never planned as part of the trip though). Would recommend this tour again.

Loch Ness and the Highlands Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
The location was perfect and made it easy to access grocery stores as well as tourist sites around the city. The apartment was clean, comfortable, and had all of the supplies we needed during our stay. The manager was very friendly and helpful with getting us settled into the apartment and explaining how to use the different appliances.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Rumors about Nessie began when an Irish monk first caught sight of something unusual swimming around the lake’s inky waters back in the 7th century.

  • For more background on the Nessie phenomenon, visit the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition at Drumnadrochit.

  • Wear warm clothes, including a waterproof outer layer, as it can get cold out on the water.

  • Day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow generally last around 12 hours.

  • The Loch Ness Centre is wheelchair accessible, however most boat trips are not.

  • Bring along a camera so you can document any possible Nessie sightings.

How to Get There

Loch Ness stretches between Inverness and Fort Augustus, and is one of many such lakes located along the Great Glen. Tours from Inverness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow typically include round-trip transportation to cruise departure points such as Clansman Harbour, Dochgarroch, and Tomnahurich Bridge.

When to Get There

Boat trips around Loch Ness run year-round, though they are weather-dependent. During summer, the main A82 thoroughfare between Fort William and Inverness sees a lot of traffic and sightseeing cruises often sell out, so be sure to buy tickets in advance.

How to Maximize Your Chance of a Monster Sighting

For the best chances of glimpsing the fabled Loch Ness Monster, choose a boat that is fitted with special onboard sonar systems to ensure Nessie doesn’t swim by unnoticed. If you're worried the sound of a motor may disturb Nessie, opt for a canoe or kayak tour instead. And if you’d rather stay away from the water altogether, the high lakeside perch which houses the ruins of Urquhart Castle makes for a great viewing spot, with uninterrupted lake panoramas.
