The Basics

Its central location both geographically and culturally means El Retiro is difficult to miss if you spend any time in Madrid. Most sightseeing tours include the park, and those interested in the park’s history and modern cultural significance can explore in-depth on a guided walking tour or Segway tour of the park, stopping at points of interest, such as the Crystal Palace and Fallen Angel statue.

The best & fun way to see the Retiro Park
We took the Segway tour to Parque del Retiro with Agustín. He taught us how to use the Segway with patience and care. The spots that we stopped by during our trip to Parque del Retiro were amazing, we stopped to take pictures and Agustín explained every single attraction. Agustín make our experience, one really fun and worth it! He was the best!!!

Madrid Royal Palace and Retiro Park Guided Tour with Optional Tapas Tasting
The tour guide (Rocio) was exceptional. She was on time at the meeting points, she used a funny, approachable, and professional manner to expose the knowledge and guide us during the whole tour. I really loved being in this group. I explored and discovered new things and felt very well guided by Rocio. The experience in Madrid with her was excellent.

Skip-the-line Madrid Royal Palace with tapas tasting & Retiro Park
David was lovely even speaking in two languages. Helpful and informative on the buildings and sculpture details, including the oldest tree in the park. And the tapas was a nice addition to the tour.

Madrid Segway TOP Highlights & Retiro Park Tour
Our tour was three quarter of an hour late, but we where well looked after. We thoroughly enjoyed our segway tour. We had not done it before, but our guide Jose was very good, took it slowly which gave us confidence. The tour states 2h 30m but we where only out for 2h. We would certainly do another one and was very pleased with our guide Jose.

When to Get There

El Retiro makes a peaceful escape from the hustle of the city just about any time, but the best time to visit is on the weekends when locals come out to play sports, read a book, enjoy a picnic, and relax. This is also when the park fills with buskers and street painters, creating quite the lively atmosphere.

El Retiro Lake

At the heart of the park sits an artificial lake, set beneath the massive Monument to Alfonso XII. For a quintessential Madrid experience, head to the park in the afternoon and rent a rowboat for a float on the lake.
