La Scala Opera House (Teatro alla Scala)

Piazza della Scala, Milan, Italy, 20121

The Basics

La Scala is an impressive sight whether or not you’re an opera or ballet aficionado. The building’s exterior may not be as remarkable as Milan’s Duomo, just a stone’s throw away, but a tour of its opulent interior is a must for any music lover. Along with the Duomo and Leonardo da Vinci’sThe Last Supper, La Scala is one of the most popular attractions in Milan, so booking a skip-the-line tour is a must. Consider joining a small-group walking tour of Milan’s highlights with an expert guide to avoid long entry waits and to learn first-hand about the iconic sights’ fascinating history. If you would like to take a full tour of La Scala, you must visit with an official tour guide. These theater tours also include a visit to La Scala Museum, which houses a collection of costumes and set designs, musical instruments, portraits of actors and musicians, and an archive. Of course, nothing beats seeing a La Scala concert, ballet, or opera, including beloved works by Rossini, Puccini, and Verdi.

Private Best of Milan Guided Tour with Duomo, La Scala Theatre and Sforza Castle
Our tour guide, Valeria, was one of the best tour guides we've ever experienced. Other people apparently felt the same; strangers would walk up to us; Valeria would welcome them with open arms, and they would tell us that she was the best tour guide in Milan. And she was.

La Scala Theatre and Museum Tour in Milan
The tour of La Scala was excellent. We got to sit in the theater boxes, watch a few minutes of a rehearsal, tour the museum, walk thru the reception areas, and see schematics of the newer rehearsal spaces. The pace was frenetic and we didn’t get to spend much time at any place. There were tours ahead of us and behind us so we had to keep moving. Nevertheless we were glad we had taken the one-hour tour and felt the guide imparted interesting information. Just wish we had more time…

Skip the Line: Duomo Cathedral and La Scala Theatre
Wonderful tour of the Milan Duomo and La Scala opera house brought to life by our tour guide Chiara who was both informative and funny. The meet up was at La Scala and Chiara was there waiting for us at the theater museum which is on the left side when facing the theater. The Duomo is massive and majestic and for an opera lover La Scala was amazing.

La Scala Theatre and Museum Tour in Milan
We were hoping that a highlight would be an view of the theatre. This was not to be as the theatre was in semi-darkness due to preparations for a performance later on in the day.

La Scala Theatre and Museum Tour in Milan
The perfect tour to know about the secrets of the history of La Scala and see the inside decoration.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Without a performance ticket or guided theater tour, you can see the inside of the theater only by visiting La Scala Museum, which includes a quick peek into the auditorium through the third-level boxes when there is no rehearsal or performance.

  • Purchase performance tickets in advance to ensure a seat.

  • The theater and museum are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, though the guided theater tour is not.

  • Large bags and backpacks must be checked into the cloakroom.

The “Staircase Theater”

The wordscala means “staircase” in Italian, but Teatro alla Scala was so named because it was built on the site where the Church of Santa Maria alla Scala once stood.
