Your guide will pick you up at 8:30 AM and you will start by going towards Quriyat, which lies on the east coast at the end of a sandy plain overlooked by the Eastern Hajar Mountains. Near Dibab is Bimah sinkhole with its inviting clear green waters, concrete steps lead down the side making swimming possible. The ancient houses and ruined watchtower perched on the mountain complete the scene. Continue your journey to the top of Jebel Shams, “Sun Mountain”, Oman’s highest peak, 3009 m. The cooler temperatures will surprise as you reach the top to get a spectacular view of the “Grand Canyon”.

Jebel Shams (‘Mountain of the Sun’) is the highest peak in the Sultanate of Oman, with a peak of over 3,000m and 20 degrees cooler than in Muscat city. Wadi Ghul is often named Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’, a majestic semi-circular canyon, mid-way around the rim of which is the ‘Balcony Walk’ – featuring amazing views through the valley, village ruins and centuries old Pomegranate trees.

With Oman’s abundant beaches, vast expanses of deserts and date palm plantations, it’s hard to think that the country has more to offer in the way of natural beauty. But a visit to the exceptional Al Khaluf Dunes will leave all such assumptions quashed! Popularly known as the Sugar Dunes, the Al Khaluf Dunes are situated near the tiny fishing village of Al Khaluf. Miles and miles of brilliant white sands form the Sugar Dunes, a lesser known tourist attraction in Oman. Lining the shore, the white sand dunes are juxtaposed against crystal clear blue waters, a view that’s hard to describe as anything but otherworldly! The dunes are permanently exposed to strong winds from the ocean, and are constantly moving. This prevents them from hardening and, consequently, it is much easier to get stuck here than in other places where sand dunes exist.

The tour begins with a visit to the beautiful Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque one of the largest mosques in the Middle East.  Visit the Natural History Museum, exhibiting the wealth of Oman’s history and thus imparting knowledge about the country’s rich culture and traditions to the visitor. Later you drive along the picturesque Corniche to the once walled district Muscat. You will have photo stops at the residence of his Majesty Sultan Qaboos, the Al Alam Palace, which is flanked by the 16th century Portuguese forts Mirani and Jalali.    You will be strolling through Muttrah Souq, where you will be bargaining for handicrafts and silver items.

Muscat, the capital city of Oman lies sparkling white, topped with golden minarets in the middle of a maze of brown pleated mountains reaching down to the Arabian Sea. Described as “Arabia’s jewel”, this city is a blend of the old and the new. Muscat is green as green can be, and defies being classified as part of a desert country. The roads are lined with well-manicured green lawns and trees. During winter this is interspersed with a profusion of multicoloured flowers. Jebel Shams (mountain of sun) is the highest peak in the Arabian Peninsula, rising to an altitude of 3,004 metres above sea level, and has a number of versants (slopes) and summits. Every time a tourist reaches a versant, he’ll find that it leads him to another, until he reaches the mountain peak.
