Porto & The “Portucalense” County

Porto & The “Portucalense” County

There is no way to escape Porto’s charm. Every corner of Portugal’s “undefeated” city is full of surprises that you will discover through all your senses. Understanding the history of this colorful city and its surroundings, is understanding Portugal’s history. Having a glass of green wine & grilled sardines in the streets of Matosinhos, is delving into one of the most basic elements of Portuguese cuisine. Listening to a lost fado, is the beginning of getting a feeling only Portuguese have a word for: “saudade”. Walking the alleyways of Miragaia with a local, is the way to see the hidden “simple wonders” that rushed tourists, miss. Riding a tram or a bus to Gaia or Foz do Douro to enjoy the beaches and sunsets, is living how locals do. And of course, sipping a Port wine in one of its family-owned shops is embracing the culture of a city like no other - Bem vindo ao Porto!

Sunday Trip from Porto to Régua by Train and Return by Boat
"Fantastic day out. The tour operator called me the day before the trip to confirm details, such as where to meet and the time. I had read in previous reviews before the trip that it is best to sit on the right hand side of the train, which we did, and the river is on this side. Although the first hour or so is just travelling through the city. When we got off the train we followed the guide for about a 10 minute walk to the boat. Once on the boat, and seated on deck, it left straight away. We were offered a glass of white Port or soft drink, and a small plate of nibbles. Then we had about an hour and a half to enjoy the views as we traveled along the river, which was nice and relaxing. Lunch was severed about 12.30, which was vegetable soup, fresh bread roll, then pork with potatoes, rice and vegetables. The service was excellent and staff very pleasant. We were offered second helpings of the soup and main course if we wanted it. Desert was cheesecake, and we had water and wine to drink, and coffee at the end of the meal. We arrived back in Porto early about 5.00pm. It was a very pleasant and relaxing day out, and after 2 busy days sight seeing Porto city and walking for miles, it was just what we needed."..."

Half Day Hike and Picnic Tour in Porto's Mountains
"We had an excellent time on this trip. Ricardo was easygoing and fun to talk to. He prepared quite a spectacular lunch, which we all enjoyed quite a bit. The hiking was fun, and the views were really good. I was surprised at how good the hiking was so close to the city. Even though we were only 25 minutes or so from Porto, the trails felt very remote, and there was really no indication that there was a city nearby. Overall a great experience, and one that I'm glad we did!"..."

Day Trip to Régua with Food, Wine Estate Visit and Tasting
"I took this tour on my first full day in Porto, and I was glad I did. It was a great introduction to the Douro Valley and better prepared me for other tours I took to the region later that week. There is a bit of chaos as we prepared to board, and it eventually became clear that there were people on the boat going on different tours. My guide found me on her list as I boarded and told me to follow her when we embarked in Regua. The boat was completely full and the dining room a bit tight, but the staff did a great job of serving breakfast and later lunch in an efficient manner and there was plenty to eat and drink! No complaints there. Most interesting was passing through the locks, and most of the time I was able to hear the English narrative, but the loud music was often distracting and irritating, sometimes playing in the background during the narrative. Everyone tried to get a seat on top in the morning, but after a couple of hours, most retreated to the air conditioned dining area because the temperature in mid-June was hovering over 40 degrees centigrade, a bit unusual at least for that time of year. Bring sunscreen and a hat! The ride was long, over 5 hours before we got to Regua, where a bus was waiting to pick us up for our wine tour. Again, a bit of chaos as different groups got off for their separate tours while others stayed on for a longer ride. The wine tasting was very well done, with plenty of wine and port to sample. Then the bus took us to the Regua train station where we could walk around the town a bit, but it was really too hot to do that for very long. Chaos again as there were no signs at the station regarding which track our train would leave from. Our guide told us track one. There was a train on track one at the designated time, but another train that you couldn't see behind it on track 3 was actually our train. Once we realized it, we got off the first train and walked around it and crossed the tracks for the other train. Our guide was almost as confused as we were about this, but she did her best to ensure that everyone was with us on the 2 hour trip back to Porto. There are other trips up the Douro and if you don't mind the long ride and it is a pleasant day, it was a nice, relaxing and great introduction to the area. But definitely go back via a small group tour by van to really get to know the people and region must better."..."
