Monte Albán

Oaxaca, Mexico

Basics

Dating back to around 500 BC, Monte Albán was continually occupied for close to 1,500 years by (at different points) the Zapotecs, Olmecs, and Mixtecs. The site was already abandoned when Spanish colonizers arrived in the 16th century. While not fully excavated, Monte Albán offers many highlights, including vast plazas, palaces, and some of the most elaborate tombs unearthed in the Americas.

Visit Monte Albán during a day trip from Oaxaca City, or combine a stop here with visits to nearby towns and archaeological ruins, such as Arrazola, San Bartolo Coyotepec, and Teotitlán del Valle. Multi-day Oaxaca tours often stop at Monte Albán.

Viator to Monte Albán was excellent

Monte Albán/half day tour
Viator was incredibly professional. Easy online booking followed by email and text confirmations. Detailed information to prepare for the trip. Timely pick up and journey to the site. While COVID protocols are limiting entrance at Monte Albán - thereby requiring early arrival and waiting at the site before they opened - our guide made it smooth and easy. Monte Albán itself was amazing. Highly recommend this visit and this tour company.

Monte Albán, Arrazola, Cuilapam y San Bartolo Coyotepec.
Monte Alban was spectacular! The essence of this place is magical and worth revisiting (says the history buff). Sr. Antonio was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable and passionate. The shops we visited were a wonderful touch, as to better appreciate the culture. Unfortunately the alebrije shop was significantly overpriced. On that note, the optional meal was a disappointment, not doing Oaxaca's culinary beauty any justice.

reliable company, informative tour, much climbing including steep steps without rails

Monte Albán/half day tour
Moses our guide is very knowledgeable and informative. I learned a lot. Was really surprised when we were left to make our way back to the entrance and the only way to get there was to descend a steep, roughly hewn set of old steps with no rail. I had to sit down and go down on my bum, one step at a time. The guide should have accompanied me or arranged for someone to walk me back to the start using a different, gentler route. The rest of the experience was excellent. Good drivers.

Monte Alban Guided Half Day Tour
Miguel was a knowledgeable, thorough, and passionate guide. He did an amazing job explaining what we were seeing, the culture of the Zapotecs, and putting everything in to context. Pickup was easy. Communication was great. And we really appreciated that the tour company let us come back on a later van. It gave us the time we wanted to explore Monte Albán. We did the half-day tour.
