James Bond Island (Ko Khao Phing Kan)

Phuket, Southern Thailand and Andaman Coast

The Basics

Ko Khao Phing Kan (also known as Khao Phing Kan and, less formally, “James Bond Island”), is part of Ao Phang Nga National Park in Phang Nga Bay. The lush vegetation, turquoise water, and secluded ocean caves make it one of Thailand's top destinations.

Spend a day exploring the area on a boat tour: You can opt to get around in a luxurious speed boat, a traditional junk, or a longtail boat; go canoeing or kayaking around the limestone caves, mangrove forests, and beaches of Thalu Island and Khao Phing Kan; and visit the floating Muslim fishing village of Ko Panyi.

We actually worked with...
We actually worked with the same company to go to Coral and Racha Islands. It was a great experience. I appreciate them accommodating and changing the tour direction because of COVID.

Phang Nga Bay Sea Cave Canoeing & James Bond Island w/ Buffet Lunch by Big Boat
My husband and I went on this trip with our five year old daughter, it was suitable for her with the staff paddling the canoes into the caves. Lots to cram in on this tour and it flowed well with some fantastic places to stop. The boat is clean and newer than some and the staff were very friendly.

James Bond Island by Speedboat
Excellent Full day trip, picked up as promised, all the places as planned, speed boat was superb. Our guide was full of fun and very knowledgeable and the camera man worked so hard capturing our experiences without being intrusive. Lunch in the floating island was way better than expected. Would highly recommend this trip!

James Bond Island Sea Canoe Tour by Longtail Boat from Phuket with Lunch
A long roadtrip to start and end which would've been nice to know before hand but a terrific tour. Enjoyed the canoes around the islands where the guide was great and the 007 island scene itself is very picturesque. Lunch in the village was okay, but was included so it you can't fault it. Overall it was a worthwhile trip, well organised and not felt rushed.

James Bond Island Tour(No Canoeing) From Krabi
Great trip, good guide, good weather, amazing island. Especially canoeing on the lake, transportation is 15 minutes late. Long tail boats are good.

Weather dreadful but still a great day

James Bond Island Adventure Tour from Phuket including Sea Canoeing & Lunch
They would only pick up from my hotel at Laguna if we each paid 200 baht (5 of us) so refused. So had to pay taxi to Patong and back which was cheaper but disappointing. The rest of the day went well, but just as we arrived at the long boats we had a big storm and were soaked to the skin. When we got to James Bond Island great views not too busy so got lots of nice pictures. Then from nowhere a massive second storm. No ones fault but worth taking a poncho with you.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Ko Khao Phing Kan is popular with nature lovers and movie buffs.

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and bottled water.

  • Tour boats can sell out quickly and should be booked in advance.

How to Get There

Due to the protected nature of the national park, visiting the islands independently is nearly impossible unless you have a permit and a private boat. There are, however, a number of tours to the area. Most depart from the marinas in Phuket and Krabi Noi. If you're traveling down from northern Thailand, opt for a tour leaving Phang Nga town.

When to Get There

Although the region is sunny and warm all year round, the hottest period is between April and May, when all-day sunshine is pretty much guaranteed. Rainy season in southern Thailand is September–October, when there is a risk of destructive tropical storms.

Marine Life in the Bay

Due to shallow waters, and warm temperatures, and rich nutrients supplied by the nearby rivers and mangrove forests, Phang Nga Bay has abundant marine life. The waters around the islands are home to 26 species of reptiles and 24 species of fish, including butterfly fish, as well as lots of shrimp, crabs, manta rays, and sharks.
