Macao Beach, Macao

The Basics

Lounge on the sand, boogie board, or learn how to surf near the beach’s bigger breakers. If you prefer to stay dry on land, an afternoon horseback ride serves up coastal views and fresh air. For a dose of adrenaline and an overview of the area’s natural highlights, visit the beach and the nearby Macao Cave during a dune buggy adventure from Punta Cana.

Learn how to surf in perfect conditions
I've always wanted to learn how to surf and a friend recommended this excursion. The people were amazing! They had the whole family up on the first run. For two hours we hit baby wave after baby wave. By the end we were itching for a bigger challenge. This is the place to learn!

Extreme Buggy Tour in Punta Cana + River Cave + Macao Beach
It was definitely an adventure. If you are expecting something boogie, this is not for you. You get dirty.

Half-Day Punta Cana Buggy Tour with Macao Beach and Cenote
So the overall experience was great..... the only thing I did not like is that the ride said 10:55am and I was in the lobby at 10:45am and I seen the bus driving out the hotel gate..... they sent another driver to come get us and we made the tour ...... overall me and my family had a great time

What a wonderful company that could not do enough for our son on his first surfing lesson. Great fun and unbelievable memories for us watching from the shoreline.

River Cave and Macao Beach Half-Day Quad Bike Adventure
The actual tour was great. You spend a lot of time riding the ATV but caution…you will get super dirty and bring some towels and maybe a change of clothes. The best thing is to bring a waterproof backpack. After the tour is over they do have outside showers to rinse off in. We had a lot of fun.

Dune Buggy + Breef Safari, River Cave and Macao Beach
It was a wonderful experience. The dune buggy, water cave and beach was so much fun! The dune buggy was a perfect time to get messy. It would have been nice to spend more time on the water cave and the beach.

Montana Redonda and Macao beach pick up in Punta Cana
Great tour! We were picked up by a great driver in a very comfortable car. The tour to the mountain was a surprise highlight of our holiday. It was absolutely beautiful up there, and there was a great view from every angle. Lunch was included, and was delicious (a very generous size too!). The guide Alex was friendly, helpful and knowledgable, and happily took photos for us. Would highly recommend this tour!

Loved the excursion. The cave was a highlight. The cultural aspect was educational. Chocolate tea was good. Recommend to others to do.

Half-Day Tour 2-in-1, Redonda Mountain & Horseback Riding Tour in Macao Beach
Doesn't promise too much: The guide bought soft drinks for us (and even a little snack because we were only the two of us), drove around safely, explained many hidden treasures of the country,... in total a very good and friendly guide. Round mountain is definitely a place worth to be visited. The cave was a bit overcrowded, but after 10 min, it was more or less ours, with very clear water to jump into. Take care of the souvenir vendors, they are intrusive and sell things way too expensive.

Family, Buggy Adventures, Tours, Macao Beach. Lowest Price.
Our tour guide B was great. We upgraded to a private atv tour and we had fun. We were a little late and they waited for us, which we definitely appreciated. Was able to drive through punta Cana and enjoy the sites and get muddy. Would definitely do it again.

Macao Buggy Adventure from Punta Cana
Our experience with this excursion started off rocky but it was very fun. Would definitely recommend. I will say, the gift shop is as expensive as can be so be ware. Also, more time should be spent at the beach as 15 min is such a tease.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Several stands sell cold beers and local grub, including fresh-caught fish and lobsters.

  • There are no restrooms on-site.

  • Bring along some cash to purchase souvenirs from the beach vendors.

When to Get There

Since Macao Beach is a favorite among locals, try to visit during the week when it’s quieter and less crowded. Expect the biggest crowds in the Dominican Republic from December through April, especially around Christmas, New Year’s, Easter, and spring break. And keep in mind, the peak months for hurricanes in the Caribbean are September and October.

Bavaro Beach

Located closer to Punta Cana, the more crowded Bavaro Beach draws visitors with its abundance of tour and cruise offerings, plus water activities such as snorkeling, parasailing, and windsurfing. This beach also boasts more amenities than Macao because of its proximity to Punta Cana’s luxury resorts in Punta Cana.
