Thrihnukagigur Volcano

Reykjavik

The Basics

Thrihnukagigur is a relatively new sightseeing destination. It was only discovered, by an Icelandic cave explorer, in the 1970s and opened up to tourists in 2012. Travelers can experience it by booking a guided tour. It’s about a half-hour south of Reykjavik and tours typically begin with a 2-mile (3-kilometer) hike to the volcano across a lava field. Visitors then board an open elevator for a 6-minute journey that descends 700 feet (213 meters) into the magma chamber. There you are free to explore the dormant volcano's cave floor, its vividly colored rocks, and frozen magma icicles, for usually around 35 to 40 minutes. After returning to the surface, visitors are typically rewarded for their efforts with a bowl of traditional Icelandic meat soup.

Tours involve a moderate amount of walking but helicopter tours are available for those unable to do the hike.

This experience was AMAZING! The colors in the volcano were phenomenally beautiful and this was truly a onxe in a lifetime experience. The hike up there was OK - there is no pressure to do it quickly, which is nice. The soup and cocoa were also nice touches.

Once inside the volcano it was awesome! The Death March across the lava field on the way back was miserable. Cold, high winds, rain going sideways, low visibility, eyeglasses a mess, waterproof boots and gloves failed - no fun. But I would do it again! Better food options at the base camp would be an improvement. Going out to the restroom was no fun either.

I took my daughter who is 8 as a father/daughter experience. The guide Unnur was awesome and fed us geological information the whole trip (above and below ground), with assistance from Oli. The hoist operator and base camp ladies were also awesome. The experience is beyond words and a memory that my daughter and I will always share. Thank you.

What an amazing experience! My son and I truly enjoyed this hike which was a few miles. Although it was rainy, they give you long, rubber raincoats that keep you dry. The tour was well organized, and it was fascinating to go inside a volcano. After the volcano, they serve traditional meat soup, hot chocolate or coffee. Wonderful tour!

Inside the Volcano team made our tour exceptional! We hiked through very rainy, windy conditions to a warm & cozy outpost. Gummi and all the tour guides were friendly & knowledgeable. Locally cooked lamb meat stew was delicious & welcome after our hike.

Went on the trip with some elderly friends from Texas and they were overwhelmed by how friendly and professional the staff people were. I appreciated how helpful and courteous the guides were during the hike to and from the volcano. A quality experience.

Incredibly fun day! And what an adventure to be lowered into the throat of a dormant volcano. Very unique experience. Guides were helpful, knowledgeable, safety conscious, and to a person had a wicked and delightful sense of humor. Highly recommended.

STUNNING tour with AMAZING guides!

Inside the Volcano: Small Group Thrihnukagigur Hike and Tour from Reykjavik
The tour was unlike anything else! This is the only place in the world to go down into a volcano, so I highly recommend. You won’t regret it if you book it. They give you some warm drinks and delicious meat soup to get you ready for the hike back to the bus. Also, when we went, they had a baby arctic fox at the base camp that we all sat around and watched. Side note: When they say the hike out to the base camp and back is for a moderate fitness level, they mean it. The hike is roughly 45 minutes each way with the hike closest to the volcano being the most strenuous. Your legs and feet will be aching, but it is totally worth it.

Stunning once in a life time of experience.

This is a stunning experience. I can’t think of anywhere else in the world you can have a similar experience. Short comfortable hike even for our 10 yr old. Along the way the enthusiastic guide shares information of the lava flows and some Icelandic history. At the base camp you can recharge with coffee or hot chocolate. Then the real fun starts. Short steep hike up to the top of the volcano, and then, into the volcano. Inside it is just stunning, you can get a glimpse of what happens during a volcanic eruption. All the small details are well explained by the guides. It is well lit so you can get a very good view of the entire lava tube. The colours attributed to various minerals present when the lava was molten. Highly recommended for all ages.
