The Basics

Whether you hike around the shore, cruise around the lagoon on a RIB boat, or set sail on an amphibian boat tour, the Jokulsarlon lagoon is spectacular from all angles. Full-day tours from Reykjavik typically combine a visit to the lagoon with a glacier hike or ice cave tour in the Skaftafell National Park, or a visit to natural wonders such as the Seljalandsfoss or Skogafoss waterfalls.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the South Coast Private Tour from Reykjavik
Dan was informative and entertaining, he was accommodating and planned the trip well, such that we could have a short detour to see the puffins at the black sand beach. Excellent driving and health/safety measures. The trip to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach was out of this world!

South Coast and Glacier Lagoon: Jökulsárlón with Boat Tour from Reykjavik
Fantastic day. Although it was a 14 hour trip, the day went quickly. The scenery was great, the glacier lagoon and diamond beach were a fantastic experience. Our guide (from BusTravel Iceland )Matt was very knowledgeable and entertaining and the coach was very comfortable with recliner seats. We felt safe with Albert our excellent driver. I would definitely recommend this trip.

2 Day Tour to Jokulsarlon with Glacier Hike - Boat Tour - South Coast Waterfalls
Kristina was great! I liked the sense of humour she had. She did an extra stop by another lagoon nearby to Jokulsarlon. Drive to the lagoon was long, but there were plenty of stops to see smaller natural sights as well as to eat / buy food. We were lucky with weather - both days were sunny.

Day Trip to the Glacier Lagoon: Jökulsárlón from Reykjavik
My tour was led by Matt and Karl and it was an amazing experience. All the stops were great and the scenery during the drive there was breathtaking. It is a long day (at least 14 hours) but Matt and Karl made sure we had a great time even in between stops. I felt like I covered so much of Iceland in one day while also being able to sit back and get the relaxation that I needed.

Day Trip to the Glacier Lagoon: Jökulsárlón from Reykjavik
This was an absolute highlight of my trip to Iceland. Exceeded all of my expectations! Very knowledgeable guide with a complicated Icelandic name starting with G and a very friendly, professional driver Maciek made the experience super enjoyable. Although a long journey, frequent breaks and stops to admire the best of Icelandic wonders made the trip go too quickly 😊 Glacial Lagoon is just gorgeous, I'd recommend getting the boat whilst you're there. Highly recommended, thank you xxx

Full-Day Tour to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
It was a long but beautiful trip. Our guide Lorenzo did a great job. He even made an extra stop for us showing a place where we could watch the puffins. Personally for us, Black sand beach and Diamond beach were most memorable.

South Coast and Glacier Lagoon: Jökulsárlón with Boat Tour from Reykjavik
Perfect your to see a lot of nice places - waterfall, glacier, lagoon and black sand beach. Be prepared that tour is 14 hours long. Comfortable bus. Nice people.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • While the lagoon is accessible year-round, boat tours are weather dependent and only in operation from April to November.

  • The icy landscapes can be chilly even if the sun is shining, so bring warm clothes, a hat, and gloves even on a summer trip.

  • There's a small café by the lagoon, where you can purchase hot drinks and snacks, or use the restroom.

  • While it’s possible for wheelchair users to view the lagoon, many of the activities on and around the glacier are not suitable for those with limited mobility.

How to Get There

When to Get There

It’s possible to visit the lagoon all year round, but the summer months are the most popular—expect crowds. Winter visitors benefit from smaller crowds and better deals on tours and accommodation, but boat tours don’t run between December and March. During that time, it’s best to visit with a guide, as road conditions can be difficult. Budding photographers should time their visit for sunrise or sunset for the most impressive views.

Wildlife at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Iceland’s glacial landscapes harbor a surprising variety of wildlife and the Jokulsarlon lagoon is a haven for seabirds, especially Arctic terns and skuas. Look out for seals swimming between the floating icebergs, or, if you’re driving from Reykjavik, stop to admire the puffin colonies at Dyrholaey lighthouse or Reynisfjara beach along the way.
