Silfra Fissure

Thingvellir National Park, Silfra, Iceland

The Basics

Many visitors see the Silfra fissure during trips to Thingvellir National Park. To truly appreciate the fissure, it’s best to go diving or snorkeling in the transparent water, which is lined with volcanic rocks.

Only PADI-qualified divers with dry-suit certification can dive in the fissure, but snorkeling is available to all travelers, even those with no prior experience. Guided snorkeling tours of the fissure typically depart from Reykjavik. Some organized tours include other activities, such as spelunking in Gjábakkahellir or Leiðarendi lava caves. Other tours make stops along the Golden Circle at sights including Haukadalur, a geothermal valley home to Gullfoss waterfall and the great geyser and nearby Strokkur.

Tasio was a fantastic guide and the overall service was great! The gear was protective and warm, the snorkeling itself was smooth and safe. Definite recommend.

This trip is awesome. The build up getting ready was a bit cold, but essential so the safety and the suit up was done correctly. Chico and Luis were brilliant guides and instructors. Then the views in the water were incredible. Thanks you to all the team

Parking instructions and meet up points were easy to find. Our guide Chico was helpful and knowledgeable in every way possible throughout the whole experience. Would recommend the dry suit because of how cold the water is. 1000% would go snorkeling again when I come back to Iceland.

A definite MUST DO! It was a fantastic experience. Chico, Miguel, and Diego at Adventure Vikings were professional and fun. We initially signed up for the wetsuit option, but were able to change to the drysuit option with no problem. The GoPro photos taken were available to us within a few days (as promised). I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Luis was awesome. I had a great time. I felt like I was in a conga line a bit, but it’s completely understandable as they need to move so many people through the space. I highly recommend this unique experience.

this was good. our tour guide Jake was fabulous. Just don’t go with the expectation of thinking it will be like snorkelling on reef, still a cool thing to do

Diego was our guide, and was AWESOME. It was out of this world. Definitely worth planning to do if you can. Be ready for the COLD. Bring your wool socks and a strong will. The views were stunning, once in a lifetime experience. It looked Like swimming in a piece of stained glass.

One of my favorite parts of our trip to Iceland! The underwater views were absolutely amazing and it was so relaxing once we got in the water. The dry suit was a bit constricting, but kept us in the glacial water. Miguel was an amazing tour guide!!

AJ was an awesome tour guide and quite a character😊. He really cared and took my needs into consideration which was lovely. Btw for the hijabi’s out there thinking of going you can’t wear your scarf. Tbh I had 5 minutes in the water before I had a panic attack as the water got into my snorkel and I couldn’t breath-so pulled out. The other guides were very helpful and attentive afterwards taking care of me. I would definitely suggest listening carefully to your guide’s instructions!

This was a truly unique experience! The rock formations were gorgeous with the sun reflecting off of them in all shades of blue and green. The dry suit protected from the cold more than I anticipated. My guide was knowledgeable and lots of fun!

When to Get There

Because the water that feeds Silfra travels underground, it maintains a constant temperature and doesn’t freeze over. For this reason, snorkeling and diving tours are available year-round. Silfra is busier in summer; get there early in the day when crowds are thinner.

The Underwater World at Silfra

The Silfra fissure isn’t home to a multitude of marine life—most fish prefer the warmer waters of Thingvellir lake—but it is a breeding ground for many different types of algae. It also boasts some of the clearest waters in the world, with the natural purification process ensuring divers enjoy visibility exceeding 328 feet (100 meters).
