The Basics

Castel Sant’Angelo is located just outside the walls of Vatican City, and many visitors combine a walking tour of St. Peter’s Basilica with a museum visit and a stroll across the picturesque Ponte Sant’Angelo bridge into central Rome. There can be a wait to enter if you don’t book skip-the-line museum tickets in advance, especially during summer. Castel Sant'Angelo and the Colosseum are two of Rome's most stunning sights to visit after sunset, so consider a Rome night tour to see both the castle and amphitheater beautifully illuminated.

Castel Sant'Angelo reserved entrance ticket with Audio Guide
The English audio guide is okay, not great. Get a human English speaking guide! Beautiful and complicated history needs much more than a brief commentary.

Rome: Castel Sant'Angelo Small Group Tour with Fast Track Entrace
Our guide (Georgio I think) was a historian, very knowledgeable and very engaging. The Castel covers a wide range of history and he was able to successfully explain many centuries of Roman history, identifying a number of aspects which I hadn’t previously appreciated. Great tour!

Amazing Tour with a enthusiastic and knowledgable guide. Highly recommend this to all, the view at the top is magnificent and the details you would miss without a guide makes it a no brainer.

Skip the Line: Castel Sant' Angelo Ticket & Audio Tour on Your Smartphone
The Castel Sant Angelo was well worth the visit even though the audio guide didn't function - no emails with codes arrived. Loads of correspondence from viator but nothing from the provider of the audio guides. But the explanation on the signs in the monument were sufficient. Also there was no line to skip on the day of our visit.

Castel Sant'Angelo National Museum Ticket in Rome
The Castel Sant' Angelo was fantastic! The only issues were the crowds and the number of stairs. Tourists have a tendency to not be concerned about their fellow tourists and can be less than thoughtful. The views were breathtaking and the interiors were very interesting. Some of the labels were only in Italian.

Castel Sant’Angelo & Mausoleum of Hadrian - Private Tour
Our guide (Serena) was amazing, she provided the right level of detail to cover the history while tying the story together with immense knowledge and passion. This is a must for students of papal history or just Rome, you will be impressed.

Skip-the-lines Castel Sant'Angelo and Pope Paul III Apartments Tour
We had a fabulous tour with Virginia! We felt very VIP spoiled as we were the only people on the tour in Sunday. She very knowledgeable, she spoke wonderful English and really took the time to give excellent pointers on the location. Loved the Pope escape passage and all the explanations on the different Popes and timelines of the place. Also was very surprised to see an Bvlgari Jewelry exhibit inside with priceless jewels from their Hollywood movie classic collection. Rate 10+

Castel Sant’Angelo & Mausoleum of Hadrian - Private Tour
The tour was great. Our guide did a good job. She was very knowledgeable about the Castel, and very pleasant.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The five floors inside Castel Sant'Angelo are a maze of rooms and corridors, so wear comfortable shoes.

  • The large terrace, where Puccini's heroine jumped to her death in his opera Tosca, has spectacular views over the Eternal City.

  • Kids enjoy the large collection of historic weapons and armor displayed in the museum.

  • The sumptuous Pope Paul III Papal Apartments are decorated with perfectly preserved Renaissance frescoes, a highlight for art aficionados.

  • There is an elevator to the fifth floor, but most of the museum is not accessible to wheelchairs.
