Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

We had an excellent family tour with Lorenzo! He had loads of interesting information about the Colosseum and Roman History. He kept a casual pace, with water breaks and shade stops- which was great for our family of 5! We also really appreciated the headsets so we could clearly hear him while walking around, without having to huddle up so close. Would definitely recommend!

Colosseum Underground Guided Tour with Palatine Hill & Roman Forum Access
Our tour guide, Amil was fantastic! She was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, it really made the tour very enjoyable despite the afternoon heat of Rome. This was my 4th time touring the colosseum and I learned so many facts I didn’t know. We were disappointed that we couldn’t take the underground tour but this more than made up for it. Brava Amil!!

Paulo was an amazing tour guide. He knows so much history. He managed to contextualize every aspect of the Colosseum and the ancient city with the history of the time period. Plus, he is such a pleasant person.

Gladiator Gate and Arena Floor Special Access Colosseum Tour
Davide gave the absolute best tour we've been on yet in Italy. We've been on several Colosseum and Roman Forum tours, and this is hands down the best. Not only is he knowledgeable, but he spent a lot of time painting a wonderful picture of Ancient Rome and made the ruins come to life. He answered all of our questions with great detail. BOOK THIS GUY!

Gladiator Gate and Arena Floor Special Access Colosseum Tour
We absolutely loved this tour! Our guide, Dario, was extremely knowledgeable, quick witted, and just an overall joy. The colosseum was our favorite part. We loved hearing about the history but also Dario’s passion for the city and its extensive history. Must do!

Lorenzo is very knowledgeable and humorous. Small group setting meant that more time for questions, etc.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
