Open daily 9am - noon and 2pm - 5pm
Via delle Botteghe Oscure 31

The Basics

Five of the catacombs are currently open to visitors, including St. Sebastian and St. Callixtus. A trip to the catacombs is often combined with a visit to the Roman countryside and the ancient Appian Way, either on foot or by bike. Choose a tour tailored for kids and families, one focused on ghosts and mystery, or a walking tour with skip-the-line access to beat the crowds.

For an exclusive after-hours experience, tour the crypt at night when it’s closed to the public and during which English-speaking guides explain past burial rituals and give historical context to the sights.

Wonderful!
The tour of the crypts was really spectacular and Divan was a wonderful guide. It's really obvious that he is passionate about Rome's history and that comes across in your experience on the tour. The ghost and mystery walking tour wasn't what I was expecting, it was much, much better. Rob is incredible and a great story teller -- I was enthralled with each story, the walking rate was very easy, and I feel like I have a whole new appreciation for Rome at night. I strongly, stronly recommend these tours and particularly a tour with Rob!

The catacomb was the highlight but the entire Appian Way was very interesting. Our guide, Patrick, was very professional and was efficient in taking us to several not well known sites in a short amount of time. I would recommend a full day in Rome with Patrick.

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Appian Way 3-Hour Private Tour
Our excellent guide pulled up in a comfortable van and drove us around Rome showing us points of interest. The Catacombs tour was very interesting! Then we were taken to an amazing overlook of Rome. Then we walked into a beautiful Church with orange candles. Our guide then took us to various sights, it was dark and everything looked magical. Our guide gave us great advice and restaurant suggestions. I highly recommend Viator, for tours in Italy!!

Great driver named Constantine! very informative. The English guide at the Catacombs spoke too softly, was difficult to hear. She walked a bit fast so the last part of our group didn't get to hear and see all the points of interest.

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Appian Way 3-Hour Private Tour
Patrick, our guide picked us up on time and was very knowledgeable about the entirety of Rome not just that relating to our specific tour. The Catacombs de Callisto were amazing. Just to think that crypts for over 500,000 were hand dug 2000 years ago in four levels over 50' deep. We also got to see parts of the old city wall along with St. Paul's Cathedral. I would highly recommend this tour and our guide Patrick

Constantine was amazing. He was on time and very easy to speak with and brought us to catacombs Appain way and then circus maximus and other attractions we wanted to see on the way back to our hotel. Pick up and drop off at the hotel was fantastic. Also the car for the 7 of us was very comfortable.

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Appian Way 3-Hour Private Tour
This was a GREAT overall experience, We timed it after a day of tours and a 2nd half day exploring. The tour guide arrived early and was super friendly. It was a great change of pace to have a VIP car service drive you around show and talk to sites that hadn’t been seen yet. The catacombs are a must for anyone interested in history or religious aspects. The property the catacombs sit on are truly amazing beautiful gardens and worth seeing alone. The stop on the Apian way is unique, again cool and visually appealing. Final destination St. Paul’s Basilicca outside Vatican City walls had little to no crowds and was stunning. To be shuffled around in class and comfort to take in the experience was an excellent break and enjoyable experience well worth the money.

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Appian Way 3-Hour Private Tour
This was an excellent tour. It far exceeded our expectations. The tour guide was quite knowledgeable and accommodating. Note worthy - We were a group of 17 persons and Viator provided return transportation from the hotel to the the sites. The shuttle service done Patrick and Mirko was par excellent! They themselves were superior tour guides whilst providing explanations for every question asked. I recommend that you use this cab service as we very happy with the service provided. Thank you Viator! Thank you Patrick Mirko!

BEST experience we had in Italy!

Catacombs of Rome and Ancient Appian Way 3-Hour Private Tour
We reserved this trip before arriving in Italy and visited several sights while in the country. Without a doubt, this was our best experience in Rome. The chauffeur, Constantin, was extremely knowledgeable and very personable. His driving was smooth among the chaotic roadways of Rome and he escorted us to some amazing places. In addition to this, he spoke very clear and concise English, keeping our trip an educational one. The only setback that we experienced was the lack of remains in the catacombs. As odd as that may sound, the photographs on your website advertising this tour show the remains of several monks but for the purpose of preservation, those remains are no longer in these catacombs. It was very misleading and a bit frustrating, but the behavior and efforts of Constantin compensated for this experience as he made it fun regardless. Thank you, Constantin, for a memorable trip through ancient Rome.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Due to the delicate nature of the surroundings, travelers cannot visit the catacombs independently; all visits must be part of a guided group or private tour.

  • Tours and group visits can be arranged upon arrival at the most popular catacombs, but visits must be booked in advance at the less-visited spots.

  • Catacomb tours are not recommended for travelers who get claustrophobic.

  • Catacombs are holy places, so all guests should cover their shoulders and thighs; it’s best to also have a light jacket, as it can get cold underground.

  • The Catacombs of Rome are not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

How to Get There

You’ll find the Roman Catacombs on Via Appia Antica, Via Ostiense, Via Labicana, Via Salaria, and other roads. They can be reached by public transport on various metro and bus lines. Many tours to the catacombs depart from Rome’s Piazza Barberini.

When to Get to There

Most of Rome’s crypts and catacombs are open year-round from 9am to 5pm with a short break for lunch; they're typically closed on Sundays. Limited access to the catacombs makes booking in advance a good idea, especially around Easter and between May and September, when Rome swarms with travelers. The cool catacombs make for a great break from Italy’s summer heat, but the quieter months are recommended for thinner crowds.

Rome’s Strangest Sight?

Perhaps the most interesting sight in the catacombs is the Capuchin Crypt, or Bone Chapel, an area containing—and decorated with—the bones of 4,000 Capuchin friars. Crypt rooms are themed by different types of bones, from skulls to pelvis and leg bones.
