The Basics

A Vatican Museums ticket includes access to the Sistine Chapel, and as part of the Vatican Museums, the chapel cannot be visited on its own and can only be entered through the museum complex. Because the Sistine Chapel attracts millions of visitors each year, those who don’t reserve skip-the-line access in advance will find long lines upon arrival. Many travelers find that the complex frescoes are best appreciated with the assistance of an official tour guide, so booking a group tour, an expert guide for a private tour, or even a self-guided audio tour is recommended.

A must see amazing tour. Every room absolutely breathtaking. The tour guide was great. I could have spent a week going through all these rooms. So much beauty. This is an absolute must do tour.

Perfect Vatican Tour with Anna

Skip-the-line Private Tour of The Vatican Museums Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter
We had a wonderful time on our private tour of the Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel. Anna was perfect - she was so knowledgeable and provided exactly the right level of information for us. We were a party of 5 people with three young adults. Anna was great with the older teens as well. Thanks Anna for a memorable, informative and fun experience.

Faster Than Skip-the-Line: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Guided Tour
This was very impressive but it is hard to absorb the many vast treasures of the vatican! The museums had something around each corner. The one disappointment was the fact that we didn't get to see St. Peter's Basilica and we didn't have the hours to see it after the museum tour by going through the line. But overall, it was still a great tour and worth seeing.

Skip-the-Line Group Tour of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica
We had a great tour! My only complaint is that there is so much to cover in 3 hours that the guide and only talk about 10% of what you see! This is a great at to spend half a day seeing the biggest attractions in Rome. You’ll probably want to plan extra time to explore the Vatican museums after the tour ends and climb to the top of the dome.

Faster Than Skip-the-Line: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Guided Tour
Maria was a fantastic tour guide! She was very thorough and kept everything interesting as we swept through the Vatican grounds and museum. I’d do this tour again, but might consider something even smaller. Semi-private means ~10 people while normal tours are ~20 people.

Skip-the-line Private Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tour including St.Peter's
Touring the Vatican Museum can be daunting. But our guide Thomas made our day super fun and fulfilled our group’s varied needs. His explanations of the history/architecture/art/importance of the Vatican were filled with enthusiasm that rubbed off on to us. My twelve year old twins will never forget their first trip to Vatican City. Grazie Thomas!!!

Santi was a great tour guide, expecially with his depth of kownlege on art and marble. I didn't really have a good appriciation for art until takeing this tour with Santi. He definitley has a knack for point out the most intersting parts of the art and was never boring. This tour was a small group hitting all the highlight that you would want to see.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Seeing Michelangelo's frescoes can be unforgettable even for kids if seen as part of a small-group or kid-friendly Sistine Chapel and Vatican tour.

  • Because the chapel is a Catholic church, appropriate attire and decorum are required. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees and to keep your voice low.

  • Though photography (without flash) is permitted in the Vatican Museums, no photography is allowed in the Sistine Chapel.

When to Get There

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are famously crowded, especially during the middle of the day. To skip the line and savor the chapel frescoes in relative peace, reserve an exclusive first-entry or early-access tour in the morning or a night tour after the general public has left. The chapel is often quieter on Wednesday mornings, when the papal address attracts most visitors to St. Peter’s Square instead of the museums.

Sistine Chapel Highlights

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the majesty of Michelangelo’s sumptuous ceiling frescoes, which cover 5,000 square feet (460 square meters) and depict more than 300 figures illustrating the “Creation of the Earth,” the “Creation of Humankind,” and the “State of Humanity.” Take a few moments to focus on and appreciate the iconic scene of the “Creation of Adam” in the ceiling’s central section, one of the most famous and replicated religious paintings of all time.
