The Basics

A Vatican Museums ticket includes access to the Sistine Chapel, and as part of the Vatican Museums, the chapel cannot be visited on its own and can only be entered through the museum complex. Because the Sistine Chapel attracts millions of visitors each year, those who don’t reserve skip-the-line access in advance will find long lines upon arrival. Many travelers find that the complex frescoes are best appreciated with the assistance of an official tour guide, so booking a group tour, an expert guide for a private tour, or even a self-guided audio tour is recommended.

Lovely guide and very impressive museum tour
Our guide was super friendly and patient. I would recommend this tour. The museum is very impressive. It's long in terms of the time so make sure you've comfortable attire, shoes and a light bag. Our guide told us lots of interesting facts, I would recommend getting a pre booked tour as it was no hassle when we arrived, all the tickets were sorted for us and it made the morning a lot more enjoyable rather than exploring ourselves.

Friday Night at the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Raphael rooms
Our guide was extremely knowledgable, and truly passionate about sharing that knowledge. The Vatican is still recovering from COVID, and hasn't been getting nearly as many visitors, so it was easy to walk through and see everything with little crowding. Fantastic tour!

Skip the Line Vatican Tour Vatican Museums Sistine Chapel and St. Peter Basilica
This was a perfect time to go to the Vatican. Because of COVID, there were very few lines, and it was so incredible to visit the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel with very small crowds. Definitely, skip the line is still a great advantage and totally worth it! Our guide, Patrick, was so knowledgeable, and I loved all of his stories. The pick up area was fairly easy to find. This tour is a must!!

Skip-the-Line: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Guided Tour
Our guide Alaura was excellent in keeping our group together. She stopped often to allow for questions. We never felt rushed despite the fact that covid has put time restrictions on areas.

Early Access Vatican Museums Semi-Private Tour with Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s
Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We saw the highlights and were able to continue exploring on our own. Did to Covid the crowds were very light except for in the Sistine Chapel. The 8:30 time slot helped with the crowds too.

Skip-the-Line: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Guided Tour
Very clear and comprehensive commentary, the right pace for the tour, genuinely informative, and whole entry process to the Vatican was smooth- however due to Covid restrictions, visitors were probably 20% of normal capacity so there were No line ups - but when things are back to normal that I’m sure will change- but a positive experience

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Seeing Michelangelo's frescoes can be unforgettable even for kids if seen as part of a small-group or kid-friendly Sistine Chapel and Vatican tour.

  • Because the chapel is a Catholic church, appropriate attire and decorum are required. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees and to keep your voice low.

  • Though photography (without flash) is permitted in the Vatican Museums, no photography is allowed in the Sistine Chapel.

When to Get There

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are famously crowded, especially during the middle of the day. To skip the line and savor the chapel frescoes in relative peace, reserve an exclusive first-entry or early-access tour in the morning or a night tour after the general public has left. The chapel is often quieter on Wednesday mornings, when the papal address attracts most visitors to St. Peter’s Square instead of the museums.

Sistine Chapel Highlights

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the majesty of Michelangelo’s sumptuous ceiling frescoes, which cover 5,000 square feet (460 square meters) and depict more than 300 figures illustrating the “Creation of the Earth,” the “Creation of Humankind,” and the “State of Humanity.” Take a few moments to focus on and appreciate the iconic scene of the “Creation of Adam” in the ceiling’s central section, one of the most famous and replicated religious paintings of all time.
