Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz District, Seville

The Basics

Santa Cruz is the axis of many popular tours, including those that explore the city’s multicultural history, spanning its Muslim and Jewish roots. In addition to the palace and cathedral, don’t miss Callejon del Agua, the baroque Hospital of the Venerables, and Archivo de Indias, which includes documents from Spain’s voyages to the New World. You might also be interested in sampling the area’s famous tapas or enjoying a live flamenco performance. Save time by booking a tour that allows you to skip the line for popular attractions such as the Real Alcázar and Catedral de Sevilla.

Santa Cruz Jewish Quarter Guided Tour in Seville
Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and we learned a lot. Would love it if the diverse history of the city was more celebrated.

Alcazar of Seville Early Access with Optional Santa Cruz, Cathedral and Giralda
Alcazar and the story behind it is fascinating. Our guide Maria, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She was funny and did an excellent job of explaining the history. The trip should not be in both English and Spanish. It took twice as long as it should have, since we had to wait for the Spanish segment before moving on. That is why I would not recommend this tour.

Santa Cruz Jewish Quarter Guided Tour in Seville
We did the Santa Cruz Jewish Quarter Guided Tour and chose the option to combine it with the Cathedral. Our tour of the cathedral was first and it was great! Our tour guide (I think her name was Alia or Alina) was very knowledgable! Party of our group actually toured the cathedral another time with one of the guides who approach you while you are in line, and this one was MUCH better! We got to see more and learn more, and it was interesting for all of us- including two pre-teens who previously toured the church! The tour of the Jewish quarter was ok- the tour guide was knowledgable but it was just too slow for us. There were 5 in or family and then 3 other people on the tour, so I understand the need to set a slower pace for 8 people- but the tour just dragged on a bit since we were walking so slow. It probably could have been 30 minutes shorter and we would have been happier.

Alcazar of Seville Early Access with Optional Santa Cruz, Cathedral and Giralda
What an amazing place! Really beautiful. Our guide Rosa 'the red' was informative and fun and obviously enjoyed her job. Here we had the chance to enjoy and absorb this amazing place. Chillier on the inside than out in the plaza! Cathedral and Giralda also amazing, orange-tree filled central courtyard beautiful but Alcazar our favourite.

Alcazar of Seville Early Access with Optional Santa Cruz, Cathedral and Giralda
Many thanks to Rosa for being such an excellent guide. Fortunately, there was only two other English speaking people booked on the tour, so we could dive a little deeper in the history of the Palace with the luxury of extra time. Visiting early, beating the crowds, meant we were able to see so much more. Rosa's knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm delightful.

The guide was really good and very knowledgeable. Although he is leaving to go to Grenada. But, took the time to explain everything and answered every question we had, he was also on time and cared about the process

Alcazar of Seville & Optional Santa Cruz Neighborhood Guided Tour in Small Group
The Alcazar is stunning and the guide provided the group with wholesome explanations of every room. We skipped right through the line and into the palace without any issues. I cannot give it 5 stars because the guide, while knowledgeable and super friendly, needed a bit more of training in English. I am sure she will get there over time. I think everyone was thrilled with the place anyway! Overall, I recommend this tour.

How to Get There

Barrio de Santa Cruz is bordered by Jardines de Murillo, Reál Alcázar, and the streets Mateas Gago and Santa Maria la Blanca/San José. It’s best to avoid driving in the city’s historic center. Exploring the area by foot is ideal, or you can rent a bike. You can also take a hop-on hop-off bus, or take the local city line to Plaza de La Contratación.

When to Get There

If you are visiting the main attractions, plan to come first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon for lighter crowds. Avoid visiting on Sundays, when most shops and restaurants are closed. Shops close for siesta from about 2pm to 5pm, while bars and restaurants take a break from about 4pm until 8pm or 9pm.

“Romeo, Romeo …”

Plaza Alfaro, one of many picturesque and romantic locations in Santa Cruz, contains a balcony that is said to have inspired William Shakespeare for the quintessential scene in his epic tragedy,Romeo and Juliet. Some say this is merely romantic lore (there’s no proof Shakespeare ever left England); others are sticking to the story. In any case, look up for inspiration.
