Trunk Bay

N Shore Rd, St John

The basics

Located within the Virgin Islands National Park, Trunk Bay attracts crowds of tourists, especially cruise ship passengers. In addition to the coconut palms and white sand beach, visitors are drawn to the bay because of its snorkeling. You can rent equipment, if you didn’t bring your own, to explore or book a guided boat or land tour that includes snorkeling. Private charters are also available. In the late afternoon, stick around for a picturesque tropical sunset.

Private St John Tour including Trunk Bay
The ST.JOHN tour was amazing. Our tour guide Kenneth was great he was very informative and taught us a lot about the Island and it’s history. He stops at various places so that you can see the beautiful views and take pictures. After touring the island Kenneth drops you off at Trunk Bay beach to spend time at the beach for three hours. He’ll come to pick you up and bring you back to the ST.JOHN’s ferry port. I would definitely recommend this tour.

St John Island and Trunk Bay Beach Tour
Great experience! If this is your first time to USVI, I recommend to do the tour early and get the layout. It will let you know what other places you might want to visit. The history and scenic stops were amazing.

St John Island and Trunk Bay Beach Tour from St Thomas
Trunk Bay is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen and this tour made it possible to get there (& back!) with no hassle. Kenneth was informative and passionate and clearly cares about the island. At first I was dismayed that we'd only have fifteen minutes to walk around the Annaberg ruins but that's honestly all you need, especially since it wasn't crowded. Hamblet made sure we got to the ferry with more than enough time and was diligent in picking up the other couple even though they were at a different entrance than expected. Cons -A lot of time was spent talking about the plight of veterans and I think it was a downer to the active soldier. -It's a long, hot tour with no snacks or water. BRING WATER. -I never wanted to leave the beach and wish we had more time there (our ferry was late and we spent a lot of time at photo spots but I think that time would be better spent at the beach)

How to get there

Trunk Bay is on St. John’s north shore, a few minutes’ drive from Cruz Bay, where ferries arrive from St. Thomas. From Cruz Bay, take Route 20 for about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers). An entry fee applies during the day, but this gives you access to well-maintained facilities. There is also plenty of parking here as well as taxi service.

When to get there

Trunk Bay is St. John’s most visited beach, so expect to encounter large crowds, especially when cruise ships are docked at the port in Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. (Check the Virgin Islands cruise ship schedule for info on that.) If you venture west, away from the beach entrances and the snorkeling trail, you’ll find fewer beachgoers and more space.

Virgin Islands National Park

Providing protection for fish, coral, marine life, and tropical and migrating birds, this stretch of preserved wilderness, known as the Virgin Islands National Park, covers most of St. John. In addition to snorkeling, the national park includes hiking trails that traverse the island and pass by historic sites like the spooky ruins of the Annaberg Plantation.
