The Basics

Because of its rich history and attractive architecture, Gastown is a big draw for visitors to Vancouver. The neighborhood is explored on many walking tours—often alongside neighboring Chinatown—during which guides explain its Wild West origins and point out key sights, such as the Dominion Building, Vancouver’s first high-rise, and the Gassy Jack Statue.

The district’s historic buildings and neon signs also make it a go-to on photography tours of Vancouver, while its thriving restaurant scene ensures it’s a popular food tour stop. You can also explore Gastown on ghost or prohibition-themed outings.

Delicious food, wonderful tour guide in Vancouver
Our tour leader, Sean, was efficient and knowledgeable. Each of the 16 members of this tour was made to feel welcome. Sean spoke with, not just to, everyone giving individual attention as if we were the most important and only one on the tour. The food presented was ample and delicious, perfectly varied. We love food tours, seek them out all over the world and this one ranks up there (all because of Sean). Thank you

Gastown Historic Walking Food Tour
Really enjoyed our walking tour around Gastown. Our guide, Jason, is like a human Vancouver encyclopedia, so knowledgeable, it was very impressive. The food and beverage spots were all quite good. I was bummed there wasn't a poutine spot on our tour, but we clearly were able to get some another time.

The tour guide was witty, knowledgeable and very friendly. We got a great deep dive into Vancouver during prohibition and beyond, and it really brought Gastown to life. We loved it, and next time we visit we will be signing up for the ghost tour!

Gastown, the origins of Vancouver
Great way to learn about the history of Gastown. Although it is a new area (<200 years old), there are some good stories and sites to see.

Vancouver Lost Souls of Gastown Walking Tour
Janet was an excellent guide and stellar performer. She was very safety conscious and managed the group expertly. She kept my interest the whole time and was able to convey humor, suspense and pathos as needed. And she kindly walked me in the right direction to my train station at the end.

Vancouver Lost Souls of Gastown Walking Tour
From the moment we arrived for check in I was impressed. Sandra really embraced her character and made her story come alive. That added so much to what could’ve been a dry history tour. We enjoyed walking through Gastown and found the tour to be the perfect length. Make sure you stop by The Diamond restaurant & bar after the tour for a proper craft cocktail. Fun evening!

A wonderful example of engaging historical storytelling

Vancouver Lost Souls of Gastown Walking Tour
Fabulous tour. Our guide, Rachael, was a brilliant storyteller, really bringing her character and that of Gastown itself to life. I loved the inclusion of real historical documents (photos and a newspaper cutting) and appreciated the 'real versus artistic licence' clarification at the end. Also appreciated the multiple inclusions of the role and histories of Indigenous Peoples' in the wider Gastown story.

When to Get There

Gastown is a busy downtown district and is most crowded in the evenings and on weekends. If you want to experience Gastown at its calmest, try coming mid-morning on a weekday or in the early morning on the weekend. One of the best times to visit is at night, when the district’s many craft beer bars and cocktail dens come alive.

What to See in Gastown

Gastown’s must-see sights are historic in nature. At Water Street, see Byrnes Block, a former luxury hotel. One of Vancouver’s oldest brick buildings, it was constructed in the late 19th century shortly after the 1886 Great Fire destroyed much of the city. At the corner of Water and Powell streets is another former hotel, the 6-story flatiron-style Hotel Europe. Also on Water Street is Gastown’s frequently photographed steam clock, which chimes every 15 minutes.
