The Basics

While a few hardy explorers have managed to summit Eyjafjallajökull, ascending the volcano is considered dangerous, with a deadly crevasse-ridden glacier at the top. Many day tours of the south coast from Reykjavik, whether by car or Jeep, venture to Eyjafjallajökull volcano. These tours typically make stops at other destinations in south Iceland, such as Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skógafoss waterfall, black-sand beaches at Dyrhólaey and Vik, the Thórsmörk valley, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. For aerial views of the crater, steaming hot springs, and rugged peaks, opt for a helicopter tour over the volcano.

Perfect day to see a real glazier
Really great tour and means to see a glacier. Our guide, Zacky from Scotland, was perfect. Lots of education and safety oriented. Glazier are mot place to take a leisure stroll with family as there are hidden dangers. Get a good guide and see something remarkable.

Can’t say enough great things about this hike and our guide Maggie in particular! An wonderful three hour excursion for me and my 18 year old daughter. Maggie was so much fun, hysterical and so knowledgeable. The hike itself was incredible and unlike anything I’ve ever done before. Highly recommend!

South Coast with Glacier Walk - Minibus from Reykjavik
This was an incredible tour. I suggest allowing for it to be a full day in your itinerary because it was around 12 hours including pickup and dropoff. Our guide Julian was terrific and helped make sure we all had a wonderful and safe experience, especially while we were on the glacier. The waterfalls and beach were breathtaking, and we had enough time at each location to enjoy it. The glacier walk was challenging and exciting. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Small Group Glacier Experience from Solheimajokull Glacier
Great experience! Our guide was fun and knowledgeable. Our group had about 15 people in it. The walk was pretty easy for athletic people. You had to walk about a mile to the glacier and then on the glacier we hiked up and down, we were pretty hot in our layers.

Because of bad weather we tried to postpone the hike. We could not find another date so we decided to go despite the rain and did not regret it. It was an exciting experiense, really unforgetable. We were also lucky to be accompanied by Josh our wonderful guide.

Kayaking on the Sólheimajökull Glacier Lagoon
This was a very interesting trip. We were provided with appropriate clothing and life-jackets and were shown how to put them on. They guide was very friendly and well-informed about the historyabd geology of the area and in particular of the lagoon. She was very attentive to our safety all while giving us opportunities to get as close as safely possible to the ice bergs. She also waited for us to take photos. It was a wonderful experience that I highly recommend.

Small Group Glacier Experience from Solheimajokull Glacier
Our first tour was cancelled due to strong winds but the company was very accommodating in rescheduling us later that week. Our tour guides were very friendly and helpful! They were always looking out for our safety and ensuring we had a good time. We spent a while hiking on the ice and the guides made sure to point out everything that we saw. Very fun and informative! Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

South Coast Adventure with Glacier Hike Full-Day Tour
Fantastic experience! My six friends and I completely loved our tour guide, Mateo. He was super friendly, funny, professional, patient, and a pleasure to be around. The places we visited on this tour were all incredibly beautiful. We loved every second on this journey. I highly recommend it. I must add that I had to postpone this tour from a Saturday to a Sunday and my experience with Viator customer service was absolutely flawless. They were accommodating, friendly, professional, and my overall experience dealing with them was wonderful and much appreciated. I love Viator!

Iceland’s Volcanoes

Though Eyjafjallajökull volcano may be better known among Europeans following its 2010 eruption, it is but one of many active volcanoes in Iceland. Its larger neighbor, Katla, just east of Eyjafjallajökull, is even more mighty and powerful. Katla, which lasts erupted in 1918, lies under the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap—the fourth-largest glacier in Iceland. It is feared that an eruption of Katla could melt the glacier and cause catastrophic flooding.
