Xingping Town (Xingping Village)

Yangshuo, China

The Basics

Wander along Xingping Old Street and marvel at architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nearby Xingping Fishing Village features nearly 50 well-preserved residences with distinctive blue brick, black tiles, and stone pillars. Stop by the old banyan tree, planted in the Tang dynasty, that keeps “eating” Buddha statues and large rocks. Just outside of Xingping (about a 10-minute walk) is the landscape that’s featured on the back of the 20 Yuan note.

The best way to experience Xingping is by boat, bicycle, or on foot. Many day tours from Guilin and Yangshuo combine a visit to Xingping with a boat cruise along the Li River, or a hike or a bike ride alongside the Li River. Photographers delight in capturing fishermen fishing using cormorants, an experience best viewed at sunrise and sunset.

Full/Half-day Xingping Photographic Sunset tour with the Fisherman
We did the Longji Rice Terrace and sunset with fisherman combo tour. Our guide Jacky was knowledgeable, helpful, and had good and timely communication. We especially enjoyed the sunset photography with fisherman tour by Li River. The Longji Rice Terrace area was a bit over commercialized and less enjoyable. Overall good trip and tour guide. Would recommend this company.

Lovely Evening

Full/Half-day Xingping Photographic Sunset tour with the Fisherman
We enjoyed capturing the local fisherman with his flock of fishing birds. The evening we selected was during the October National Holiday when many Chinese travel during the week-long celebration. Our local guide, Leo, requested we meet an hour earlier than schedule to accommodate the extra travel time and he took extra measures to make sure we got to the perfect spot to capture the sunset. We recommend this tour but advise to avoid visiting over the National Holiday the first week of October.

Truly amazing experience!

Full/Half-day Xingping Photographic Sunset tour with the Fisherman
I signed up for this tour in a rush as I didn't have time to research. All I read was that this involved a sunset tour which sounded great. When my tour guide Andy came to pick me up, it was then that I realized that this was a private tour taking me to one of the most breathtaking places in Yangshuo for a photo opportunity which includes my own private fisherman! To take the best photos with no one else in the background, Andy suggested that I go a little deeper into the river and even brought slippers for me. Even though I did not have professional photography equipment with me, I had a truly amazing experience and wonderful time thanks mainly to Andy for being such good company and thoughtful guide. Completely exceeded my expectations!

  • All the boats and rafts along the Li River are motorized.

  • Those who ride a bicycle to Xingping should note that the Fuli route is mostly flat, while the tea plantation route features hills and is suitable for more experienced cyclists.

  • If you plan to hike from Xingping to Yangdi, bring sun protection and water as there is very little shade.

When to Get There

Xingping is a popular attraction and many tour groups stop here. Local market days can be lively time to visit, but expect large crowds. Crowds swell during the May and October national holidays, the height of the local tourist season. Sunrise and sunsets are the best times for taking photos of fisherman with cormorant.
