Northern Lights Tours in the Yukon

Northern Lights Tours in the Yukon

With crisp air in your lungs and snow crunching underfoot, watching the elusive Northern Lights dance across the Yukon sky is an unforgettable experience. Here’s how to catch the colorful Aurora Borealis in all its glory on a tour in the Yukon.

When to Go

Visitors to the Yukon Territory stand the best chance of catching the Northern Lights in winter—from the end of August to the middle of April. The dark, clear nights in the Yukon wilderness at this time of the year make for prime Aurora Borealis viewings. Yukon winters can be quite cold, so be sure to dress appropriately.

Where to Go

Nestled on the banks of the mighty Yukon River, Whitehorse is a great base from which to head away from the city lights and into the Canadian countryside in search of the Northern Lights in the night sky. It's a small town with plenty of history and culture, offering easy access to the open Yukon away from where your tour guide will make sure you have the best chance at an Aurora viewing.

How to Go

Northern Lights tours generally depart from Whitehorse after dark—between 10:30 and 11:30pm depending on the season—and take travelers to special dark sky-viewing spots deep in the wilds of Canada’s Yukon Territory. Night tours typically last about four hours and include pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Whitehorse, although multi-day tours are also available, offering an in-depth Yukon experience from Whitehorse or even Vancouver. These tours may include activities such as ice-fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and tobogganing.
