Itinerary
To begin, meet your enthusiastic local guide inside the Beer Temple, a short distance from the original Heineken building in the Amsterdam center, an appropriate starting place for this refreshing adventure! Walk the beautiful streets of central Amsterdam, stopping in the downtown area to sample local beers and learn about the Belgium and German influences that have shaped the Dutch brewing industry. Learn about the spots where Amsterdam warehouses used to store beer back in the 15th century then take a detour through the red light district to visit a small brewery located within this infamous area.

The Royal Palace was originally built as a Town Hall in 1648. During the French occupation of the Nethelands it was used as a palace by Louis Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon. And when the French were defeated it was given to the freshly appointed King Willem I, and thus stayed a palace. These days The palace is used by the king for entertaining and official functions during state visits and other official receptions. It is also open for visitors.

Literally meaning the New Church this church was consecrated in 1409 after the Oude Kerk, or Old Church, grew too small for the expanding population of Amsterdam. These days it’s not being used as a church anymore, except for Royal weddings and coronations.

During our tour we will be walking through the Chinatown of Amsterdam, the oldest Chinese district of continental Europe! The first chinese people arrived in Amsterdam around 1911. These days there are restaurants and shops from many different Asian countries located in this area, as well as the Buddhist He Hua Temple.

The Nieuwmarkt has been a market square since 1614, the name meaning New Market. There are over 20 cafés and coffeeshops facing the square, and when the sun is out, every terrace is packed to the brim! There is a daily market, as well as an organic food market on Saturdays and a market for antiques and books on Sundays in the summer months.

This intriguing building dominating the Nieuwmarkt started out as a gate in the Medieval city walls but was converted into a weighing house, after the city walls were demolished in the 17th century. It has had many functions since then, with the most elusive being an anatomic theatre, where Rembrandt painted his famous “Anatomy lesson by dr. Tulp”.

The Oude Kerk, or Old Church, is Amsterdam’s oldest building. It was dedicated to the patron saint of the people of Amsterdam, Saint Nicholas, in 1306. Built originally as a small wooden chapel in 1213 its roof is the largest medieval wooden vault on the continent. Today you can visit and admire the four organs, one of which has been built by the German Christian Vater in 1724 and is regarded as one of the finest Baroque organs in Europe.
