Meet your guide in central Barcelona. Depart by air-conditioned coach and head to the mountain of Montserrat, a cluster of cone-like peaks that reach up to 4,051 feet (1,235 meters) in height to the north of the city.

As you travel, pass through scenic villages and hear tales from your guide about Montserrat’s main claim-to-fame—the magnificent Royal Basilica and Monastery of Montserrat. The mountainside church and Benedictine abbey is best known for its Black Madonna (La Moroneta), a statue of the Virgin Mary that has made it one of Spain’s most popular pilgrimage sites for centuries.

Admire the epic landscapes as you ascend the mountain, and on arrival, take in the views over the countryside and Barcelona. Then, after an introduction to Montserrat’s history, use your entrance ticket to head inside and enjoy free time to explore.

Explore the vast basilica and its echoing interior, see the revered Black Madonna, a small wooden statue housed in a small room, and learn the story behind this hallowed sculpture. Then, if time allows, walk up to the grotto, traditionally said to be where the statue was discovered.

If your tour is on a weekday (select dates only), perhaps hear a recital by the Escolania, one of the most renowned boys’ choirs in Europe. You can also opt for a walk through Montserrat’s audiovisual museum to learn about the daily life of the monks, finishing at the gift shop to taste and perhaps buy some of the traditional liquors made at the monastery.

After your time exploring independently, return to Barcelona by coach where your trip ends.

Abadia de Montserrat
Montserrat is a rocky mountain located 50 km to the southwest of Barcelona. It is considered the most significant and important mountain of Catalonia. The etymology of Montserrat comes from Catalan Mont (mountain) and serrat (serrated). The mountain receives its name for its peculiar morphology. In 1987 Montserrat was declared a Natural Park to ensure its conservation. The highest peak is called Sant Jeroni (Saint Jerome) and stands at 1,236 meters above sea level. Besides the main monastery of Santa María de Montserrat, there is a great number of small churches and chapels, some of them abandoned. The main monastery stands at 720 meters above sea level. Nowadays there is a community of 80 monks that live there and follow the rule of Saint Benedict. When you arrive, you will enjoy an introduction to the history of the monastery.

Regrettably, our tour was canceled by the operator. However, Viator personnel were attentive and helpful resolving the issue.
Great experience

I hr drive to a holly place in the mountains. It was little hard to find the meeting place. It is in the bus station terminal 19.
Amazing views, a must visit

The location was definitely 5 stars! Breathtaking views, amazin history and just amazing to see how nature can take so many shapes. From a tour itself it was good but not anything great in terms of what we got from education vs what we would have received there but it was a very convenient option for the price to not have to drive ourselves to Montserrat’s and deal with parking etc. Still would recommend this tour for a group travel option and it was through Julia travels as a reference.
A must see!

Would definitely recommend seeing Montserrat if you are traveling to Barcelona - the views from the mountain are spectacular. The bus ride out and back was nice - big coach buses. The guide talked about the history of the area on the way out but she was a bit difficult to understand. There was no commentary on the way back.
A beautiful place

Good tour

Clara was Very helpful and knowledgeable. She did the tour in english and spanish. Huge credit to her. The only negative thing is the time given to visit the cathedral , walk the viacrucis, licor tasting and audiovisual is not enough to accomplish Tour still worth it, good value for your money as the place is at least 1 hour away.

Everything was perfect. Guides were very friendly and gave good and interesting information during all the trip
Excellent views
, Oct 2019
The views up the mountain were excellent! Our guide performed a very good job and explained everything in detail. Though with many visitors, the Basilica still provided us with a tranquil feeling. We hope we could have stayed longer there. A must visit place in Barcelona!
Morning in Montserrat.
, Oct 2019
We set off around 9.15am in a very comfortable coach. Our guide Adam was very informative about Barcelona and its history. We had a short guided tour at Montserrat then some free time before being driven back to Barcelona. An enjoyable half day.
Basic tour of area
, Sep 2019
Basic bus ride and introductory guided tour of Montserrat. Clear day, but be prepared for lots of tourists and waiting in line to see Black Madonna or Choir sing. Needs to be longer to allow for exploration of trails and walkways. Lots of restaurants and shops for foods and souveniers. Pick-up site is near Hard Rock Cafe in central downtown.
