Depending on the size of the group on the day, your tour will return either to the main office or to the Hard Rock Cafe- in Place Catalunya, which is just a simple 3-5 minute walk from the office.

Start your trip from central Barcelona, continuing by an air-conditioned vehicle on a drive through the lush countryside to the charming village of Besalú. Once you arrive, hop out to begin a walking tour of this ancient city, stopping to admire its streets lined with medieval-era architecture. Then visit a nearby mikveh (a 12th-century Jewish bath) before stopping by a medieval synagogue.

Continue next to Castellfollit de la Roca, a positively minuscule town situated on the edge of a basalt cliff. This tiny village harbors 1,000 citizens in a town that’s just 3,280 square feet (1,000 square meters). Proceed to Rupit, where you have time to wander this beautiful hamlet at your leisure. Stroll the cobblestone roads lined with 16th-century houses, cross the city’s hanging wooden bridge, and make a visit Rupit’s baroque-era Church of Sant Miquel. Feel free to have lunch (at your own expense) before checking out the ruins of the Castle of Rupit set on a picturesque rocky peak.

After Rupit, take a scenic drive towards the sandstone cliffs at Cingles de Tavertet, set in the Ter River Valley, passing by the area’s megalithic tomb and its Iberian Wall as well. Then arrive in Tavertet, taking time to explore the area’s 48 preserved homes from the 16th and 17th centuries with your guide. Hear a few details about the village from your guide before checking out the 11th-century Romanesque Church of Sant Cristòfol. You then have time to take a break, grabbing a coffee (at your own expense) or enjoying a short walk to the scenic overlook at Panta de Sau lake.

Finish your trip with a ride back to Barcelona, during which you enjoy vistas of verdant-green forests like Magatalls, along with the UNESCO Man and Biosphere-listed El Montseny natural park. You are dropped off back at your departure point in Barcelona at the end of the day.

This was a highlight on our 3-week European vacation! Rod was a fantastic host and guide—very funny and knowledgeable. We had a great group and enjoyed the tour. It was a nice way to break up our stay in Barcelona with a day trip.

Hello, Thank you for the review. It's great to be doing tours again, and this is still one of our most popular tours taking guests to some amazing medieval villages. I think one of the best things is that the villages we visit are real, living villages and not just a tourist attraction. We hope to see you again next year! Thanks, Robert

Great tour

Besalu was nice, but the best parts of this trip were Rupit, which our guide (Enrique) described as “like out of a fairy tale” and that’s so accurate! Also the breathtaking views and the peacefulness in the mountains were incredible. And Enrique… he was fantastic! A lot of driving, but I really enjoyed escaping the city for the day

My wife and I really enjoyed this trip and highly recommend it! Our guide’s name was Enrique and he was great. He showed us some sights around Barcelona before heading to our first stop, Besalu. Next we went to Rupit where he already booked us a table at a local family restaurant - plenty of food (3 course meal) and drinks for under 20 euros per person. We stopped at several places with breathtaking scenery along some “special” roads navigated by Enrique. Our final town was Tavertet. We had a little free time in a couple of places as well. He explained different landmarks and history during 2+ hours in the van, and he was a safe driver. We were back in Barcelona by about 6:30. It was a great day and we think you will enjoy it. There are some hills and steps so probably not good for strollers or walkers, but the van has great AC and there are plenty of water and bathroom breaks.

We really enjoyed this day trip. We got to see a lot of the countryside around Barcelona. Areas we would never have been able to see if we tried to go it on our own. I highly recommend it!

Comfortable bus and competent driver, Toni, made those switchbacks not so scary!! Gloria, our guide was very knowledgeable and theatrical. The 1st and 2nd villages were the most interesting historically, the 3rd with best scenery.

Discover Middle Ages in Catalunya

We enjoyed a day tour with Xavier and Miki to three wonderful medieval towns of Catalunya: Besalú, Rupit, and Tavertet. The visit was a discovery of medieval life and a history lesson. Xavier was very dynamic, interactive, inclusive, and extremely knowledgeable. His English skills were impecable. We truly appreciated his recommendation about what to do and see in Barcelona, even beyond this tour. His lunch recommendations were outstanding and the whole day went by smoothly. Miki was a very careful and prudent driver and made us feel safe at all times. We highly recommend this tour and congratulate Xavier and Miki for a job very well done.
