What To Expect
Receive a morning pickup from your Waikaloa or Kona hotel from a luxurious high-ceiling Mercedes van. Before proceeding on your first volcanic adventure, you’ll fuel up with an early deli-style lunch served along the Big Island’s historic Saddle Road.
Enjoy your first hike of the day at Mauna Ulu, spending 2.5 hours trekking to visit the steaming crater mouth of this volcanic site. Your well-trained guide will ensure your hike through this active volcanic area goes off safely and smoothly. Depending on the weather on the day of your visit, you might even be able to see the ongoing eruption happening at nearby Pu’u O’o.
Proceed to your next hike, a 2-hour round trip that follows a ridge before traversing the crater floor of Kilauea Iki. As you travel along the ridge, you’ll observe the unique flora and fauna of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ecosystem, including the area’s native Ohia trees. Once you arrive down on the crater floor, marvel at the amazing scenery, which includes surreal lava formations and smoky steam plumes.
Take a brief hike through a lava tube before continuing to the 4,000-foot (1,240-meter) summit of Kilauea itself. This relatively easy walk will bring you into view of Halema'uma'u Crater, where you can admire the glowing red of the lava that lies just below the surface. Finish the day with dinner at a local-style eatery before getting dropped off at your hotel.

Amazing tour!
SDp
, Aug 2021
I’ve traveled to many places and taken many tours. This is by far one of the best I have been on. We saw not only the craters and volcanos but also many parts of the island. Mike, our tour guide, was amazing. He is extremely knowledgeable and well rounded. He knows so much about the island and just about everything we saw. He is extremely accommodating. We had a 10 and 8 yo as well as my parents and heard us feel assured that what we felt ok doing wasn’t a problem. If you are on the big island, don’t pass this tour! Make space in your schedule to go on it!

The best hiking tour on the Big Island!
Snehal_P
, Jul 2021
Mike took us on a once-in-a-lifetime hiking experience to the mouth of Mauna Ulu which had last erupted in 1974 and is still steaming. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history of the mountains of Hawaii, the flora and fauna, and kept us all engaged with his stories and fun facts. He was flexible with the itinerary and allowed for stops along the way to let us try fresh sugar cane and strawberry guavas. He kept our three kids interested with beautiful stories from Hawaiian folklore. We visited a few craters, a lava tube and did a short hike to Akaka falls. We loved talking with Mike, whom we called the Hawaiian Forrest Gump given all this interesting life experiences across the earth.
Once in a Lifetime Volcano 🌋 Tour!!

This was the best tour of many I had during my 2 week stay across 3 islands! It’s one of those once in a lifetime experiences. Our tour guide was amazing and so knowledgeable! Highly recommend. It should be top of your list!

Mike did a great job, very informative about the whole island, not just your sites. The lunch and dinner we're good and we are at some unique places.

Customer Focused!

Michael does all the hiking tours and was extremely helpful, informative, and safety-focused. On the way there he stopped on the side of the road several times so that we could take pictures at iconic spots or he could show us fruit at a local vendor. Some 'tours' are just chauffeurs, but Michael was a true guide and expert on Hawaii and Volcano National Park. We got to go up on the edge of a volcano - a place you can only go with a certified guide. I considered going by myself to hike in Volcano National Park, but I'm glad I didn't. We got so much more out of the trip and got to see so much more with Hawaii Now Adventures!
Response from Host , Feb 2020
Thanks for your kind comments. We are very pleased that Mike was able to provide you a unique experience. All of our guides pride themselves on making sure you leave the Big Island with the best possible memories possible. Please join one of our other unique tours next time you come to the big island!
EXCELLENT & A MUST DO

, Dec 2019
I was so fortunate to experience this tour with another solo traveler Hana and our amazing guide Mike. A group of 10 rescheduled, so we got to experience so much during this whole day tour. The hiking was absolutely my favorite part of this tour. However, everything we did was excellent from the fruit stand on the side of the road, black sand beach with green sea turtles, local coffee farm in the South, lunch at an amazing portuguese bakery (hot pastrami sandwich delish), and dinner at the Rock's uncle's diner (rice with oxtail soup and macadamia pies delish). Mike is so kind and extremely knowledgeable and I can't wait to come back and take another tour with him. Thank you for an amazing time.

Let me start with saying that I usually hate guided tours. Not this one! Mike was an excellent guide, fun and and VERY knowledgeable. He made the day a great one! We saw and did things you would never be able to do/find on your own. The day was a great mix of sightseeing and hiking. The hikes were fantastic...ones I’ll never forget, SO glad we decided to do this tour! Thanks Mike!!!

Everything would have changed now due to the recent volcano activity. But... This tour was really really great. We saw so much in one day, it was unbelievable how much ground we covered. Note: You must be physically able to do a bit of hiking ! Our guide took the time to explain alot to us as we were hiking worth the money for sure!

This tour was an amazing experience. Our guide was laid back, knowledgeable and funny. It was impressive when we stopped at the base of Mauna Ulu to give a prayer of thanks before climbing to the summit. We did this tour before the current eruption began to change things, so parts of what we saw are now changed forever. We were so fortunate to have a guide who knew all the little ins and outs of where to go and who to talk with. We stopped to pick fresh wild growing fruits that none of us had ever seen or tasted. He took us to the Southern most Bakery in the US for lunch and it was just fantastic. We even stopped briefly to see the black sand beach and as if on que there was a sea turtle there. We look forward to retuning to The Big Island and we hope to be able to use him again. Things will be much different now and we are excited to experience it all. Thank you and mahalo.

Michael Nelson, our Volcano adventure guide from Hawaii Adventures Now!, was extremely knowledgeable of Volcano National Park. We would never have hiked to some of the remote areas in the park without the guidance of an experienced guide. Michael's knowledge of volcanoes, the fauna in the area and formation of the various geographic features was extensive and he readily shared his vast knowledge and enthusiasm. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate for the night hike and our view of the volcano's glow was very limited. But, the hike was one of the highlights of our trip.

Mike was a FANTASTIC tour guide. He was extremely kind, knowledgeable and friendly!! The tour was lengthy but not too intense. There were times when I was pushed a bit physically but nothing that I couldn't handle - even at 54 years of age.
Mike knew so much about Hawaii and had great stories to share!!
Our group was fun because we all liked to talk.
If you like a little physical challenge and enjoy learning more about the history and culture of Hawaii, this is the tour for you. This tour was the highlight of our trip!!
We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.

Sorting, ranking, and search results
Viator wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That’s why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.
On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You’ll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.
You’ll see some experiences with a “Promoted” badge, which means that the operators of those experiences have agreed to pay Viator more to have their experience highlighted.
If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period.
The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We’re always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.
