Beautiful views with great history and guide

My fiancé and I were only in Ireland for a short time but I am so glad we made time for this great excursion. With it only being a half day we still had the whole evening to ourselves and were so impressed with Howth we stayed for dinner. We had the best tour guide named Wally. He made sure everyone was included, waited for everyone and gave great history along the way. He was so interactive and friendly. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide or experience. He let us stay and take pictures as long as we liked. Highly recommended.

WALKING TOUR

The tour was absolutely breathtaking. We were able to view the beautiful countryside as well as hearing a little bit of Irish folklore along the way. We traveled thru forests and alongside the water and experienced a bit of rocky terrain. Our tour guide, Carl, was very informative and very nice and had a great sense of humor. Make sure you take a light jacket with you since it gets a bit windy as you go up and a running shoe is just fine but I would probably wear a light hiking shoe if you have them. I would definitely do this tour again. Again, Kudos to Carl!!!!

Howth walking day tour with Carl

, Aug 2019
Carl learned the first names of each our group very quickly to personalize our experience. The day was a combination of historical information, folklore and laughter. The walk was fun and some of the views were breathtaking. Carl is a wonderful storyteller who interacted with each of us individually and all of us through stories. At one point we were in the forest and there was a delightful open spaced where we gathered around the branches of an old gnarled tree to hear a story. 26 people were still and listening intently. My wife and I really enjoyed the day which started and ended with a short train ride (25 min. Approximately) from Connely station in Dublin to Howth, return.

6 Miles Hiking All Day ... GREAT but not for younger kids

This was a family excursion, myself, wife and our 8 year old son. I did not pay attention to the hiking requirements when I made the booking.
It is one of the most beautiful places in the world I think with incredible history. John was our animated, informative and very pleasant Irishman leader. He has a passion for his country, Ireland, and takes you to astounding historic and ancient places in a very well paced and pleasant journey through Howth.
This is my review after only completing part of the tour, about 4 hours. Our son was spent, but we put him through some strenuous hiking for an active but, city kid.
We stopped at an Irish pub after completing an amazing journey with John. This is where we left the group. John was very helpful with instruction and options on how to return to the train station.
To start John took our group on a walk to a train in downtown Dublin to Howth. Less than an hour train ride you are there. We walked to a store first after the train ride to Howth to pick up lunch supplies. We then walked to the Howth Castle, maybe a mile? From the castle, which you only see on the outside, its occupied. Then we passed through a golf course and ventured into the Howth hilltops up and back down. again, You are walking a lot, well actually hiking up and down through very passable terrain. There were about 12-16 others in our group, all adults, and again the pace was comfortable and steady. It's just not for younger kids unless they are prepared to handle passable but uphill hiking . I highly recommend this tour just be sure you understand the hikling requirements.

Fabulous Day Trip

When I arrived at the meeting location I was advised that the English tour guide was sick. My options were to take the tour on another day (but I was leaving the next day), take the tour in Spanish, or to get a refund. I decided to take the tour in Spanish even though I have extremely limited Spanish language ability. The guide was fabulous and took the time to explain to me and another English speaker what he was telling the rest of the group in Spanish.
The hike was wonderful with amazing views!! That said, I found it a bit more strenuous than what I was expecting. The description does say that it's about six miles long and on a variety of paths, but it was quite rocky, with a combination of steps (some a bit high), inclines, declines, tree roots ... etc. I wore sketchers but could have used a much sturdier hiking shoe/boot. In total for the day, walking from my hotel to and from the meeting point (less than 1/4 mile) and to and from the train and the hike itself I walked about 9.5 miles. But it was totally worth the (71 year old) sore knees!!

Awesome views, but very fast paced

I went on this tour with my 11 year old daughter. The views were spectacular, any way we turned we saw picture worthy views! Our guide was very entertaining and engaging. Overall, I would recommend this trip for younger people. It involves a lot of pretty fast pace walking, much of it uphill. My daughter had hard time keeping up and was extremely tired in the end. We also had an older couple in our group and they couldn't keep up either. That is my only complaint that it is very fast paced, hard to keep up if you are not used to so much walking or not as physically fit. Also, we didn't have any time to enjoy the gorgeous scenery and take pictures. The guide did stop at several locations for picture taking, but for the most part we had to be concerned about not getting too far behind our group. I understand that he had to bring us back to the train station on time to catch our train, but it would be much better if the trip was planned better and given more time not to be so rushed.
