Check-in: 7.15am - Your guide will be holding a WALKABOUT sign, right by the taxi stand at Santa Maria Novella train station across from the outside McDonald's

7:30 AM
This activity will end right where it started.
Your journey from Florence to the Cinque Terre starts by coach, where you can relax as your guide shares stories about the area. You'll hear tales about the Tuscan city of Lucca and its famous resident Puccini, before learning about the Cinque Terre and its five fishing villages—Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso and Riomaggiore—that form the national park.

After a short, two-hour drive, you'll begin your hike through the Cinque Terre on the hills above Manarola. With your guide to help lead you, you'll follow a scenic trail to Corniglia, which culminates in a steep climb of some 382 steps. Note: This charming region is natural and untouched, so there are no hand rails or safety rails, and paths often cut close to the cliff's edge. (if you choose the tour option without hiking, the train will be used instead to move between villages).

Once in Corniglia, you'll enjoy some free time where you can relax and refuel with these spectacular views, before continuing your journey with a hike to Vernazza, where you'll pass terraces of olive groves and colorful bars and cafes. Take a dip in the bay before heading to Monterosso by train, where you'll have free time to explore the beaches, wine shops and artisan goods famous to the village.

The final portion of your journey will include a boat ride (or train ride, depending on weather) to Riomaggiore, a village known for its candy-colored houses, as well as a final hike back to Manarola. Your day trip from Florence to the Cinque Terre ends with a coach ride back to the city.

Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Borgo Storico di Corniglia
The middle town of the five, Corniglia is the smallest town and sits at 90 metres above sea level. The name derives from the huge spur of rock on which the village sits. Population of about only 200. San Pietro church from the fourteenth century on the site of an eleventh century chapel. San Pietro's day is 29th June and as part of the celebrations, there is a procession through the streets. A special savoury tart is prepared with rice, eggs and cheese and is shared among the people who take part in the procession.

Cinque Terre Trails
These ancient trails are rough but manageable. Be prepared for the hiking – although the path is open to everyone, remember that the ground can be slippery, uneven, and in places steep and narrow. The charm of the area is that it is natural and unspoiled, do not expect hand rails or safety rails when steps are steep or when the path is close to the cliff edge. Because of the nature of the hike, we are unable to accept small children or anyone with walking difficulties.

Stop At:
Vernazza
Vernazza is unique in the Cinque Terre because of the small port that was built allowing ships to land in the protected bay. It was already a fortified village and efficient maritime base in the earliest records available from the eleventh century. Today there are traces of the military defences built by the Genovese in the thirteenth century such as traces of the old walls, ramparts and the look out tower.

Stop At:
Borgo Antico
There was a castle here before 1200 and some ruins of it can still be seen. The community of Monterosso was founded in 1214. The church of San Giovanni Battista, built-in 1220 has a bell tower built in 1400 as a lookout tower. The church of San Antonio di Mesco was built in 1335.

Stop At:
Spiaggia di Fegina
The new town is called Fegina and is linked to the old part of Monterosso by a pedestrian tunnel. Statue of Neptune built into the rock, but made of concrete so badly deteriorated, was built by an architect in the 1920's. The sandy shelf provides the ideal habitat for seagrass which acts as a lung for the waters of the Cinque Terre and provides a beautiful beach for us. The whole area is a marine protected area, like the sea version of a national park. 2007 Forbes magazine called Monterosso the sexiest beach in the world....whatever that may mean.

Borgo Storico di Riomaggiore
At Riomaggiore, centuries ago, the distinctive tall, colourful houses known as Genovese tower houses arranged in rows connected by alleys, arches and steps provided a defense against pirates. House colours are regulated by the comune. You can't just paint them any colour you like! Houses have two entrances, one at the front and one at the rear on the higher road, so that when they were attacked by pirates, the people could escape. At the end of the eighteen hundreds the railway came along the coast and Riomaggiore, along with the other towns of the cinque terrre came out of their historic isolation, even though a road wouldn't reach them until the 1970's. Language, lingua ligure, the villages were so cut off even from each other that they spoke different dialects of the same language.

Beautiful scenery, but rushed day
Michelle_Y
, Jun 2022
Scenery was fantastic. Alicia worked hard as a tour guide. She was informative about the area. Lunch was good. There were some concerns we had. We would have enjoyed more time in each village. A better option may be to limit the number of villages visited. It seemed very rushed the entire day. The day we went was very crowded, especially at the train stations. It was easy to loose the guide/group. It would have been extremely beneficial for all guides to have a flag raised as we walked to/ from all train stations. It’s important for the guide to stop and wait for the group when there is a choice in routes. The hike was difficult - please make sure people understand that.

You can't miss it!

This trip was amazing but the best part was by far how close you were to nature. The hike is a must-do. It is a bit difficult but you get plenty of time to go at your own pace and the view is uncomparable. The three modes of transportation that are taken, bus, train, and boat make it an interesting combination for the day. You are given the option to go eat at a local restaurant and I would highly recommend it. Their pesto pasta is amazing. Our tour guide Francesca was extremely welcoming and helpful. She gave us some great suggestions of where to eat on our next stop, Venice. If there is one tour you want to do in Italy it should hands down be this one.

Amazing Day!

One of the most amazing days of our trip to Italy! Comfortable transportation, amazing guides (I cannot remember the name of our guide but she was in her early 20s and INCREDIBLE) who were super knowledgable and personable. The hike was definitely difficult for us who don't hike very frequently, but doable and we're so glad we did it. The views were amazing. Great place for lunch. Long day but it doesn't feel like it because you're having such a blast. Highly recommend!!

Alessandro was an amazing guide! (The bus driver was great too ) He was engaging and informative throughout the entire trip. He did a great job of making sure we were on time with everything and was clearly well acquainted with the area. He was able to answer every question we had and was very accommodating and even gave us suggestions about other stops on our trip! Overall a great experience that we would highly recommend.

Chris and Francesca were amazing. Both guides were extremely knowledgeable and kind. We saw covered a lot in a very short amount of time. It was a very long day, but totally worth it as an intro to the area. Cinque Terre is gorgeous!

Feast for the eyes

Fabulous trip! The sea and the 5 villages were a feast for the eyes! Our guides Chris and Ado were phenomenal. Super informative, organized, and friendly. Even the bus ride out was a pleasure, full of sights and information. Bring a suit, there may be time for a quick swim, which we were able to do. The hike is strenuous but worth it, the most incredible views! The entire 5 villages are a Unesco heritage site, and appear trapped in time. One of the highlights of our trip to Italy for sure.

Chris and Odo were amazing tour guides. They were very thorough. They gave us all of the information we needed to know and beyond. They stayed with us the whole tour. When I do it again I will definitely go back with them. We had lunch at an amazing little restaurant in one of the islands very recommended by them and it did not disappointed. 100% satisfaction. My kids and husband loved it as well.

Excellent day trip to Cinque Terre! The hike between Corniglia and Vernazza is pretty intense but worth it. Buy two lemon slushes at the 1/2 way mark!

Little gems by the sea

Wow!!! This was my second trip to Cinque Terre I'm a year with Walkabout and it was just as spectacular this time as last. Just a few hours from Florence, these pastel colored villages are one of the highlights of ANY trip to Italy. Our guide, Chris did an amazing job of giving us history and information on the area. And he and fellow guide, Francesca successfully managed to "herd all the cats" as our large group traveled by foot, bus, train, mini bus, and boat! DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR!

The villages were stunning. The boat ride was nice. To rushed- to much to see with five villages in one day. Guides should use a pole that hold up higher with a flag on it for people to see. Groups should I’ve color coded stickers. Guides could have shared more of the history of Cinque Terre.

Very long day but a must do. We got to see 5 different towns and explored each. Nice mix of guided tour and free time. Hike with the lemon slushy in the middle was my favorite part. Even got to swim too! Wish my group got to do the boat ride.

Great tour with great guides

The Guides (Ado and Alice) were great - full of interesting info. It is an active trip if you do the hike but everything was really well-organized and there was free time in all of the towns to explore (including swimming, if you want). We also did the lunch which worked out great. The food was delicious and the lunch was quick enough to allow us to still see the town. Plus, the views were spectacular. We definitely recommend the lunch too. We are traveling with our kids and they loved this tour too (even though it is not specifically geared towards kids).
