Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Get an early start to make the most of the fresh tropical morning, and meet your guide at the launch point near the Wailua River, Kauai’s only navigable waterway. Get outfitted with a provided kayak, paddle, and life vest, and store your belongings in a dry bag before setting off on the gentle currents.

Soak up the verdant jungle scenery and views of volcanic peaks in the distance on a 2-mile (3.2-km) paddle upriver towards the north fork. Feel transported back in time as you pass by the traditional huts of Kamokila Village and hear tales of the native Hawaiian people who once lived around and traveled the river more than 1,500 years ago.

Take a break from paddling to explore the rain forest by foot on a moderate hike to the Ulewehi Waterfall, where you’ll be rewarded with views of the majestic falls cascading 120 feet (36 meters) down a mountain cliff. Recharge with a riverside picnic lunch of fresh and healthy island fare including vegetarian options before hopping back in your kayak for the return trip to the starting point.

Not a Leisurely Stroll
Scott_S
, Dec 2021
This was way more intense than we thought, but we absolutely loved. One of the best experiences of my life. My kids were real troopers. The rest of our group was amazed by our 6 year old daughter. The waterfall at the end is well worth the work getting there. And I can't enough about Don, our guide, he took the time to stay back with my family, who were the slowest kayakers. His stories were great and him being a native led to a personal touch. He was funny and interesting to talk to. But, all that being said, this is no leisurely stroll. If you're a family with small kids, keep that in mind. Even my 11 year old was making up songs about wanting to see his Xbox again on the trip back. If you feel like your family can handle it, then you will be left with a memorable experience of you all accomplishing something together.

Aloha Scott, Sounds like your family had quite the adventure! This tour is not for the faint at heart lol Guests get a good workout! Don is local, born & raised on Kauai and loves to share Hawaiian history, culture, legends. All our guides are super patient with first time kayakers and will stay back with them and let the more experienced kayak ahead to a meeting point on the River. I had to Lol about your 11 year old wanting his Xbox haha! Glad your children got to experience the beauty of the Wailua and Uluwehi Falls. I am sure this will be a memory that your family will never forget! Thank you for choosing our company for your family’s excursion!

A must do adventure!

Nathan was a thoughtful and thorough guide. We went at a perfect time at 7:45am. There weren’t many people on the river or at the falls. Lunch was good! Great workout kayaking the river and being under the falls was invigorating! Definitely recommend!

Love it, slightly challenging
SIERRA_D
, Nov 2021
Great adventure. We had 11 people in our party from age 7 to 45. This is not an easy excursion. It’s not terribly challenging but definitely for active people. It was out first time kayaking for these non water people and we had a great time!
icon Response from Host , Nov 2021
Aloha, Thank you for your review. Our maximum capacity per tour is 12 guests. Guests must be able to kayak 4 miles round trip and hike 2 miles round trip. Guests definitely get a workout for the day! The majority of our guests that come out with us have zero to little experience kayaking. Our tour guides go over safety & paddling instructions with their group before they begin their excursion. We are happy to hear you had a great adventure!

Great experience: beautiful rainforest and a waterfall, good exercise for arms and legs ;-), interesting stories by the guide. Your shoes will get totally wet, I wore five-finger shoes and they worked just great

Feels like we could have...
Jessica_C
, Oct 2021
Feels like we could have done this trip alone. Although our guide was very nice there wasn’t any discussion of the history as mentioned in the trip info. Next time I’d rent my own kayak or SUP and do the trip independently. The waterfall is beautiful and would definitely visit again.
icon Response from Host , Oct 2021
Aloha Jessica, I am so sorry to hear that you would have rather done this trip alone rather than with our guided tour company. Could you please let us know who your guide was? As you can see from our reviews, our guides are very engaging & love to share Hawaiian history & culture and flora & fauna with their guests. If you could please email us at kauaikayak@gmail.com so we can address this immediately, I would greatly appreciate it.

Really Fun Kayak/Hike adventure
Holly_W
, Oct 2021
This is a must do experience. I had never kayaked before and was able to get my bearings quickly. The kayaking was fun and the hike to the falls was great exercise for this 57 year old. The falls are breathtaking. Thank you Nathan for a great experience. Tips: Hike has slippery rocks and is muddy. Have your hands free to help you. Take only the following: sunglasses, camera, sunblock, hat, car keys, tip for guide.. Wear your bathing suit and tevas. You don't need anything else. I am 5'9 and hit my head hard on trees twice... you can't just look at your feet. (No injuries...ok I bit my tongue but am fine.) Really fun trip.
