The tour guide was very friendly and informative. The tour and tour bus was hard to find, there was no identification.

Tour operated by Madrid Bus Vision

Booked three day trips out of Madrid, two were with Julia Travel, which departs from Calle de San Nicolas. These tours were excellent. This tour with Madrid Bus Vision departed from Plaza de Espana. There was no organization or information provided when the guides arrived. The tour left late and dropped people off at the shopping center of Las Rosas which made it even later. One guide did the tour in both Spanish and English and spent a very long time in each room of El Escorial which left us little time to see the library and the Hapsburg Palace parts. I recommend going to these two sites but make sure you are meeting at Calle de San Nicolas so that you are going with the excellent company, Julia Travel.

A big disappointment

We booked this Viator excursion for a day trip from Madrid to El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen. We have used Viator in the past so we expected an experience similar to a previous one which was very good. The day got off to a bad start when, as we gathered at the meeting place, there was no communication with the group about why there was a delay. Finally the crowd began following the woman who appeared to be in charge (she had not introduced herself or communicated with us at all). We moved to a new location and waited and waited. Finally she told us that we were waiting on a bigger bus because our group would not fit into the bus. We were supposed to meet at 10:45 and depart at 11:00; we did not depart until 11:25! Once we departed, there was no apology; a few people on the bus were upset and the guide was very defensive. She really lacked any hospitality training. About 30 minutes later, we pulled into what we later learned was an outlet and the guide said something that was unclear about who was to get off the bus. After a few people got off, the bus began to pull away and some people in the back began to yell because a man had gotten off by mistake. It turned out that the man did not understand what the guide said and thought he was supposed to get off at that stop. The visits to both El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen were very interesting. Unfortunately we were unable to visit the Basilica at El Escorial due to a wedding. We wondered if we had left on time if we would have been able to see the basilica. The group was divided into two smaller groups for El Escorial and the group that had mostly English speakers got to wear headphones. The other group did not and that guide had to talk loud to make herself heard. We were told there were not enough headphones for both groups. At the Valley of the Fallen we were one large group and the guide spoke in English and then in Spanish or vice versa. The guide Arancha's English skills are not developed well enough for English groups. She lacks the vocabulary to accurately describe what needs to be described. For example rather than saying a martyr died at the stake, she said that he was barbecued. As we returned to Madrid, the guide made an announcement that there were some road closures and that the bus could not drop off some people at location that had previously been designated for them. There was almost a revolt among some very angry people. More poor communication. Not a good day.

My group and I enjoyed this tour...

My group and I enjoyed this tour. Both places were beautiful and worth visiting and seeing. The tour guide was competent and pleasant. She did a good job. If I had to change one thing it is to shorten the El Escorial visit and lengthen the Valley of the Fallen visit because it seemed we were pressed for time at the Valley of the Fallen site. I wish we had another 30 minutes there. Overall, this was a very good tour and worth the visit.
