Hierve el Agua was an amazing tour. The views were spectacular!!! It would of been nice if they had guides to explain how this was formed. You can swim in the 2 lagoons. It is a bit of a hike but worth it.

8:30am: hotel pick up, the most our driver spoke to us the entire trip. Expect to spend close to 9 hours of day in a bus crammed with other tourists. 9:30am: First stop at an artisan textile workshop in teotitlan. The family is lovely and the demonstration of how they make and dye their wool is cool (but was mostly in Spanish) but then you are shown to a sales floor filled with overpriced textiles. The tour description says you will have the opportunity to walk through the town, this is not true. You are kept in the show room floor to look at expensive rugs for what feels like forever. Then you are herded back into the bus to drive two hours on bumpy dirt mountain roads with lots of switch backs so if you suffer from any motion sickness, reconsider this tour. 12:00pm: Hierve el agua has some nice views but there was only two pools open to swim in, the rest were marked off with caution tape. There is no explanation of anything about the site, our driver simply opened our bus door told us when to return to the bus and walked away. You have two hours to spend there, then head back down those bumpy roads to lunch at a buffet style restaurant. 3pm: lunch. Driver again says almost nothing as you get off the bus; we had to ask one of the waiters for any clue on cost and time at this restaurant. you have 1 hour to eat @ $165 pesos per person (drinks not included) then another 30 minutes drive to final stop. 4:30pm: tour of mezcalaria. Seemed like it was good for those who spoke Spanish, but as we do not, we missed a lot of what was shared. This, despite asking for English tour and guides several times. Again, driver of no use as he just opens the bus door to offload and reload us like sheep. Spent about and hour at the mezcalaria then finally headed back to Oaxaca. 6:00pm: drop off at our hotel. Underwhelming to say the least. A day of our lives we will unfortunately never get back.

Remember to eat your own breakfast…
Valerie_B
, Mar 2022
The tour is pretty minimal and not very well planned out. There’s no breakfast, so make sure you eat something before you go - lunch won’t be until 3pm!!! The first stop is a weavers home which was probably the highlight - they’re lovely, warm folks, but their prices are pretty high (if you visit the valley yourself, you can head to the market where prices are 50% lower). Waterfall was great, unique experience. Food stop was pretty good, but like i mentioned, we were also starving. Last stop is mescal “tour” where the guide was impossible to understand. Wouldn’t recommend.

The transportation van was for 8 passsengers, just the right size.
Our driver was good driver and courteous. The walking guide was a volunteer at the site, only spoke Spanish. If you go with a group and don't know Spanish, maybe someone in the group would be bilingual and translate for you, as a lady in our group. We went in the pools at the base, walked up and had coconut water before we left. I highly recommended it for the mountains scenary and the site view. Remember to bring sunblock and a bottle of water for the hike which is only over 1 mile but steep at a few certain places. Caveat: I thought lunch was included but we had to pay for our lunch. No big deal but Viator should make this clear in the trip description.

Hello Hien_N!
Thank you for your comments, we are happy that you enjoyed the tour. We do our best to keep the description specific, as food is not included. The local guides on the site only speak Spanish, they do not have a fee, they only accept a tip but doing the trek with them is optional. We hope you continue to enjoy Oaxaca and its surroundings.
This tour, I believe...

Busy but not rushed day
deborah_c

We were picked up right on time from our AirBnB by Nacho. There were 6 of us, but the other 2 couples only spoke Spanish and Nacho did an excellent job of juggling the 2 languages all day. The day was full, but never felt rushed. The hike back up from the falls is pretty rugged, so you won't be doing it unless you've got great knees to navigate many tall uneven steps. It was very dry while we were there and alternated between chilly and windy and hot depending on the elevation. We did not like being told to tip the guide at the falls who only spoke Spanish, but he stood and waited until we did. We were with Nacho the whole time and probably saw the guide for 30 seconds. The textile demonstration was interesting but it's always uncomfortable to be at an artisan's place and not have an intention to buy, especially in a small group. The buffet was not cheap (extra charge) but was enjoyable and had many options. We enjoyed the mezcal talk and tasting. There were some very personable young people in charge who spoke very good English. We were able to taste any and everything, which of course resulted in a bit of buying. The distillery is pretty touristy - it would have been nice to visit one of the tiny places we passed along the way. Being dropped back off at the doorstep of our AirBnB after the long day was priceless. Nacho was a very patient, knowlegable driver/guide. His English is very good.

A perfect day to swim and take in the culture

An amazing day! Our tour guide Ignacio was super informative and led a great tour. We started with Hierve el Agua, which has got to be one of the most magical places. The swimming there was so incredible, I loved it. We also stopped at a great buffet, old Zapotec weaving village, and mezcal tasting. Highly recommend this tour

Our guide was nice and very humorous. He was very attentive and made sure we knew what was going on at all times. The guides were kind and patient with us making our way back from the bottom of the rock formations at Hierve el Agua. Loved the kind and very intelligent lady showing us step by step her weaving process in the beautiful valley of Teotitlan. The mezcal tasting was great. Thanks for a good time.
Great views and service!

Nice day out, seemed in the wrong order

, Aug 2019
I am not sure why but we could just not find any tours which went to only Hierve el Agua, they all seemed to stop off at points we weren't really interested in. We chose this tour as it had the least amount of other stops and a full 2 hours at Hierve el Agua, which was good. However, it seemed an odd order to do things in, given that the weather in the morning is better in Oaxaca and the pools get busier as the day goes on, I don't know why we didn't go there first. Instead we spent 1.5 hours learning how hand woven rugs were made, this was interesting, but not 1.5 hours interesting. Our guide perhaps should have also been a bit better at rushing others in the group along, we ended up being 3 hours late back to the hotel! The English guide at the Mezcal place was great, but on the rest of the tour, no English is spoken, so it shouldn't really be an option to select an English tour.
Response from Host , Aug 2019
Hello cmcra
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your opinion, this helps us improve every day, I am very sorry that the tour has not met your expectations.
We have received comments about the time they spend in Hierve el Agua, which is why since August 25, we already have another half-day tour in Hierve el Agua, and with this tour that gives you two hours, there are already two options to spend more time in this wonderful place; I want to mention that we are the only agency in Oaxaca that offers this two-person service.
There are always different behaviors in a shared tour, and I will send the comments to the guides, to find a way to regulate the time in the house where the colored carpets are made, so that they rush the tourists without feeling pressured.
I will speak with the guides so that they are more flexible and according to the weather conditions and local situations, they can change the order of the places to visit.
Our drivers who go on this tour speak English, but I will make sure they speak a little more English on the tour. Thank you for mentioning the benefits of the tour such as: fewer stops, more time in the Hierve el Agua and the visit to mezcal in English.
We hope in the future to have the opportunity to have your preference again, to know other sites in Oaxaca and its surroundings. We will continue working to make each tour memorable.
All the best,
Edgar Santiago

We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.
