Your day trip to Port Arthur Historic Site starts with the drive from Hobart, crossing the Tasman Bridge to leave the city and head to the Tasman Peninsula. Sights you see along the way include Pitwater Causeway, the Forestier Peninsula, Eaglehawk Neck, and Norfolk Bay. Take a drive through the historic town of Richmond (Oct-Apr) and make a short photo stop at the famous convict-built Richmond Bridge.

Continue to drive through the Tasman Peninsula and observe the beautiful coastal scenery of natural bushland and native Australian.

When you arrive at Port Arthur you have ample time to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Embark on a guided walking tour of this former seaside penal colony, once home to the most serious criminals of the time, where more than 30 restored buildings and ruins are available to explore. See sites like the penitentiary, a former granary and flour mill, the separate prison, the Commandant’s House and the church, and learn about the history of the settlement, which dates back to the 1830s, and the brutal living conditions for the convicts via interpretive and interactive presentations.

Then set off on a harbor cruise on Carnarvon Bay to admire the natural beauty of this somber World Heritage–listed site. From the water, admire the scenery of Tasman National Park with its rugged coastline, see the Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen, and circle around the Isle of the Dead.

Lunch is not included but can be purchased at Port Cafe, at the entrance to the Port Arthur Visitor Center, or at Felons, a sit-down restaurant. Both offer a selection of sandwiches, hot food, and drinks. Your day trip ends with the return drive to Hobart.

Our tour was really well run. We were picked up from our hotel & returned at the end . The guide at P A was excellent he spoke with enthusiasm & included the children in the group too. I would advise that the cafe was very expensive & the main restaurant was closed as it was Monday .

Great trip, except it poured all day, and my husband contacted corona virus from someone on the bus. On the upside, our driver, Sue, was fantastic, she really made our trip. When we come back, as we intend to do, we will repeat the trip and we expect to see Sue.

Worth the trip down to Port Arthur

You could get a Redline bus down to Port Arthur from Hobart but with the tour you stop at a number of places on the way and back which makes the tour much more worthwhile. On the way down to Hobart we stopped in Richmond and on the way back at various stunning locations including Devil’s kitchen. Given the history of Port Arthur to not only Hobart but Australia it is worth spending the day there.

It's a good experience to visit Port Authur. You can know the history there, and see their exhibition to know more. I can't believe that beautiful place which was a prison. By the way, you should go for once.

Our tour guide Nigel was knowledgeable and provided a good range of information and guidance on how the tour would run. The coach was not too large and the group was not too large. Port Arthur was very interesting as was the short bay cruise. The other stops on the tour were also very interesting with some spectacular scenery.
