During Rome’s hot summer, the Vatican Museum opens its doors for reservations-only Friday night tours that include an appetizer buffet and classical music (music on select Fridays only). This 3-hour Vatican Museums tour is led by a professional art historian, and is limited to 10 people for a more intimate, personal experience of the Sistine Chapel, the Upper Galleries, and other Vatican Museums highlights.

Make your way to Vatican City to meet a guide and small group for this nighttime tour of the Vatican Museums. With a group of 10 people or less, your tour will be face-to-face, without the headsets that larger tours use during daytime visits.

Nibble snacks from an appetizer buffet and sip the drink of your choice in the Pinecone Courtyard, and enjoy warm, early-evening light as you explore the Vatican. The Sistene Chapel is especially stunning at night, when it’s lit from below with golden light. Visit the Gallery of the Tapestries and Candelabra, then see the Hall of the Maps, where Pope Julius II commissioned huge maps of the known world in the 16th-century.

In the Octogonal Court you’ll find classical sculptures from the collection of Pope Julius II della Rovere, some in the places they’ve occupied for 500 years. Visit the four Rafael Rooms: frescoes in the Papal apartments depict scenes from the bible and the classical world, and battles from the Crusades. On select Friday nights through the summer, classical music concerts are held. This tour concludes at the main entrance of the Vatican Museums.

Tour was not what we paid for

We booked a 2 1/2 hour tour. We got a rushed 1.25 hour race to the Sistene Chapel with no time to look at very much along the way. 20 minutes looking at posters describing what we would see and 40 minutes watching part of a concert. Most important we booked the tour that included a drink and an aperitif but were told it was another 18 Euro if we wanted food, we were starving for the tour and didn’t get dinner until midnight after planning to have a snack at 8:30 pm. Our guide had no idea what we were talking about.

Wow is just the only term that comes to...

Wow is just the only term that comes to mind after the tour we had last Friday night. After a little miscommunication about the meeting place we met Luciano, our well informed and enthusiastic guide just outside the museums. As it turned out we were the only participants of the tour so we had our own private guide! As we visited the Vatican gardens earlier in the day, we had a good impression how crowded the entrance and museums can be. Compared to that the evening is extinct! There was no line at the security check so we could walk right in. We were guided to the Pinecone courtyard where the buffet and concert were going on. The food was delicious and we could take our time. After this we had about 2 hours before closing time. Luciano guided us through the museums and at some moments we had a Gallery for ourselves! The only more or less crowded room was the Sistine Chapel. Luciano could answer every silly question we could fire at him and because he knew most of the guards he could arrange for us to shoot very beautiful pictures from out of the windows. At closing time we were one of the last people to leave the Sistine Chapel. Once we were outside again, Luciano surprised us with a small gift. All in all this was a night we will not soon forget!
