Located at San Francisco’s ever-popular Pier 39 along the Embarcadero, the Aquarium of the Bay offers an educational look at local sea life.

A general admission ticket gives access to all of the aquarium’s main exhibit areas, all of which focus on the marine life of San Francisco Bay and nearby waters. Together, the exhibits are home to more than 20,000 sea creatures. Stay all day if you wish. The aquarium is yours to explore at your own pace.

Discover the Bay Exhibit: Ever wonder why anchovies swim in schools, or what life is like for a newly hatched skate in San Francisco Bay? Learn answers to questions like these in the Discover the Bay exhibit area, which is also where you find some of the bay’s brightest sea creatures, including green moray eels and California’s state marine fish, the orange garibaldi.

Under the Bay Exhibit: Thousands of marine animals, including octopuses, swim above and around you as you meander along a 300-foot (90-meter) tunnel system of clear glass. See moon jellies and Pacific sea nettles, giant sea bass and colorful starfish, and deepwater fish such as leopard and soupfin sharks.

Disappointing experience
Yvette_S

It’s very small and it lacks variety…. Not really worth the money if I’m being honest. I will admit, the tunnel part was very nice.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. The Aquarium of the Bay’s focus is on local marine animals from the San Francisco Bay and its watershed. We are glad you enjoyed the Near Shore and Sharks of Alcatraz Tunnels during your visit and thanks again for your review!

Very close to everything, fun for the family and very friendly even offer complementary s’mores kits.

Thanks for the excellent review! The complimentary s'more kits must have come from somewhere else on PIER 39. However, we’re happy to hear you had a great experience.

A memorable visit
Tawny_M

Seeing how excited my 6 yr old son and 3 yr old dtr reacted seeing all the exhibits. We knew it was worth the trip. The tunnel was amazing and seemed fitting since SF has a lot of tunnels 🌆 It’s definitely smaller then expected however each show cases were 110% satisfying. Loved the jellyfish exhibit and the octopus 🐙 Very clean and all the animals seemed clean and healthy. Would love to come again!!! Thank you

Love of the aquatic life
Joselyn_M
, Sep 2021
Aquarium of the Bay was a great learning experience. Loved the section where we were able to touch the baby stingrays, and the tiger shark. So cool, it made me feel like a kid again. Also, the main attraction of the underground tunnels that were overlooking the sea of fishes, and sharks. It almost really felt as if I were really under the sea. Such a great organization. Please help support these lovely sea creatures. Perfect for families, tourists, or anyone really who are interested in aquatic life.

Poor value for the cost of the admission.

Cleanliness of the aquarium was appreciated. The staff were pleasant and professional. I have visited innumerable aquariums across the country. Unfortunately, this has little to impress as a great aquarium.
icon Response from Host , Aug 2021
