Absolutely amazing!

Amazing experience! The drive wasn't too long and there were stops to use the bathroom and get snacks halfway through. The hot spring stop on the way down was very relaxing and gave us a chance to chat with the others on the trip. The tacos for dinner were delicious and more filling than I had expected.
And the actual boat ride and bio bay - absolutely amazing! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Luckily we were there at an optimal time to be able to see the bioluminescence (you want to go as close to a new moon as possible), and had cloudy skies.
Bring a light jacket for the boat ride, as it can be a bit chilly. Once at the bio bay, you have the option to either take a pool noodle or a life jacket into the water, and there is a ladder if you're like me and a bit hesitant about jumping right in. The guide and boat captain assured me they would let us know if they saw any jellyfish, which was a concern for me but I felt at ease after talking to them about it.
Being able to see the sparkles of bioluminescence with every movement in the water was absolutely magical. I'm so glad we chose this tour and this bay.

Swimming in the bio bay...

An amazing experience but be prepared

A wonderful experience. But keep in mind this is a very off-the-beaten path trip. If you expect luxury treatment and five-star experiences, this is not for you.
The van ride was fine in a well-equipped Mercedes. But it was very hot. Even with the air conditioning on high, we were sweating.
The visit to the hot springs was not what I expected. This is a tiny “resort” with two very small concrete pools fed by a natural hot spring somewhere on the property. I thought we would be in a natural experience, but this was more like visiting the local YMCA.
Lunch was okay. Fish tacos with too much breading, but still delicious. It was funny/strange with a half-dozen feral chickens under the tables looking for scraps.
The boat ride was wonderful, but I love boats. These are small, fully open boats that seat about 8 people. Be prepared to get wet and cold unless you bring proper clothing. The trip to the sand bar was okay. Local boats blasting their music was not my idea of relaxing. Also, bring water shoes as the sand bar has some sharp rocks under water.
Also keep in mind there is nowhere to change clothes on the boat. We changed on the stern surfer style, wrapped in towels and pulling our swimsuits off under the towels…literally 3 feet away from the captain and tour guide.
Another tip: bring a LOT of dry clothes and towels. You will get wet three times on this trip. You will get your suit and towel wet at the hot springs, but there’s no way they will dry before you get to the sand bar. After the sand bar, it’s another 30-minute ride to the bio bay in an open boat. So you will need a dry towel to wrap in for that trip. Then after you swim in the bio bay, you will want another dry towel.
The bio bay was fantastic. Truly an amazing experience.

Bio Bay Tour - Awesome nature trip

La Perguera bay is almost a 2-hour drive from San Juan, which is quite a bit further than the other bio bay options. However, with this particular tour, we had the chance to swim in the water with the bioluminescence, which was really cool. This is not allowed at the other two bays for various reasons.
On the way down, there was a stop at a natural hot spring in Coamo that has been developed into a sort of spa-like area. This was a bit lost on us, but it did help break up the drive. We then drove almost another hour to the town of La Parguera where we had dinner - 3 street-style soft tacos, choice of fish, chicken, or vegetarian. We had the fish tacos, they were delicious and quite filling. You could have either a bottle of water, a soda, or a small can of a local beer with your food.
We then made our way to the boats - they have two fishing boats and put 4-8 guests on each one. First we went out to a sand bar that is a common party area. There were several other boats there as well as a tiki bar float. After a 20-30 minute swim, we made our way into the bay.
We could see fish lighting up as they jumped out of the way of the boat while we entered the bay. Once we were fully stopped, our two boats tied up next to each other and we had another 30 minute swim period. It was quite fascinating being in the water and seeing the flow around your arms and legs as you kick and move.
The drive back to San Juan felt long - we drove straight through, though a potty stop was offered but no one needed it.
The tour crew were all very friendly and the lead guide was helpful. One thing I kind of liked is that there was not a constant chatter from the tour guide during the drive - she was driving the van! I have been on the tours where the tour guide talks the entire time - all 12 hours - that's really exhausting!
While this tour is a bit pricier, we felt it was worth it as it included dinner and the very personal and direct interaction with the bio bay. I recommend it to anyone considering it!
Amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

An amazing experience

What a great experience! Our host, Johmara was very attentive and informative and did well to cater for all the groups needs. Although a 2 hour drive from San Juan, it went quickly (nice van - a Mercedes’ sprinter) and we stopped after an hour for a comfort break. First stop was the natural springs, which were essentially 2 outdoor spas (90 and 110 F). There were changing facilities and a shop to get drinks. After an hour we then headed to La parguera for dinner (6pm) for Tacos (I recommend the fish) which was more than enough. Here there was somewhere to get changed before we walked 5 or so minutes to meet Frank our Captain. The boat was 22ft and it took 10 Minutes to the quiet bay - there was one other boat there. Once in the water and when the cloud came over and in the shadow of the boat the bioluminescence was easy to see! It sparkled like tiny aqua fireflies - a bit like Timkerbell’s fairy dust. Quite amazing to see and I think this is the only bay where you can swim - it would’ve been disappointing in a kayak. After what seemed like a minute (it was over an hour) we headed back to the van for the trip back to our hotel. Got back late but buzzing from a great time!
I Thoroughly recommend spending the extra to get into the water.

What a great experience swimming in the sea with bio luminous creatures!!
Everything about the tour is 100%.. Robert is a friendly and great host. Picked us up in a very comfortable luxury van, the ride was beautiful and then we headed to the boat.
Dinner and drinks was a plus.
Loved the whole experience.. will definitely recommend it to everyone.
Thanks Robert!!

Robert (your guide) was awesome. He was on time, had an awesome bus. They took us to a beautiful place in La Parguera where we could swim in the ocean, had an amazing view of the terrain and the stars. The only downside with the trip was that bioluminescence wasn’t as you see in the pictures. You’d have to jump in water and splash around to experience it.

Magical experience!

I am so glad we went on this tour! Robert, the driver and primary guide, picked us up from our hotel in a nice air conditioned van/bus. He had good communication that morning about the pickup. The drive is about 2 hours south and west of San Juan through the mountains and countryside. There is a stop at a gas station/coffee shop for a bathroom break about halfway through. You get a few choices for lunch at a local restaurant in La Parguera: breaded fish tacos, chicken tacos, or veggie tacos. Be aware that they are flour shell tacos if you have any allergies - I had a salad instead because I am gluten free. This is also your last chance for a bathroom break until after the bio bay tour. You will go out on Captain Frank's small but nice boat to a small cay for the sunset, then he will take you into the bay for the actual experience. Robert explained about the organisms that create the bioluminescence effect and showed us the best places to swim around the boat to see the effect. It was magical! There are life vests and noodles available to use. The water was perfectly warm and they provided a great and encouraging environment for everyone to swim. Captain Frank is very friendly and knowledgeable as well. Once the swimming experience is over, you will head back to the town to change into dry clothes and then board the bus for the ride back to San Juan and be dropped off back at your hotel. Overall it was a great experience! Definitely bring towels and dry clothes.

I love this trip! This is mainly a boat trip with 2 stops to swim. Bring comfortable clothes to change into afterwards, a towel, & wear a bathing suit 👙 & something over top cause the boat is windy. There is plenty of sun! So SOAK up the rays or take something for shade like a hat, & for rain hoodie/poncho. Kid friendly, disability friendly & the bio bay is to die for.

I cant even describe how amazing this tour was! It was three of us total , my partner, cousin in law and me. From beginning when Steven (the tour guide/driver) picked us up till the end it was an unbelievable experience. We drove through the center of the Island where the view of the mountains were unbelievable. Kept driving to the southwest of the island were we hit las palgeras. OMG! We ate Fish tacos (they also had chicken and veggie tacos). It was really good! Then after join the captain for the bio tour. I always wanted to do the Bioluminescent, but never imagined it would look the way it did! It is one of the best things I’ve done in life! Scared at first and then the magic happens. It was unbelievable.
Steven was amazing, friendly, patient, and funny!
Captain was awesome and very knowledgeable.
If I could give this tour 10 stars I would! Thank you Borikua tours for this experience!!

This is an amazing experience. I chose this particular excursion because I’m not active enough to kayak and was traveling with my mom who is 69. The crew was so helpful in getting us on and off the boat. They explained the biology behind the dinoflagellates and Steven, our driver, came along on the boat. He was great! This was very laid back, required no physical effort, and was superior to having to kayak. I’ve done that before and felt like I was going to be washed out to sea and panicked. We also stopped to eat and the food was great.

My girlfriend and I chose this tour because this is the one Bio Bay where you can go swimming, rather than just kayaking through the water. It did not disappoint. Being able to swim in the water made this experience. The bioluminescent microorganisms that create the light glow when you disturb them. You can do more of that swimming than with a kayak paddle.
Also, don't expect it to look like the pictures. Or to be able to take pictures, unless you're familiar with low-light photography techniques. It's not all about the pictures though. Enjoy the experience because it's pretty magical.
Our guide was also friendly and full of knowledge about Puerto Rico, the towns we drove through, and the Bio Bay. He made sure we had fun and were comfortable.
Response from Host , Sep 2019
Hi!
Thanks for the best explanation ever of the bio bay. Kayak is fun but swimming is a blast! I agree with you 100%. The color in the water is more greenish but the low-ligts cameras capture the color electric blue, is something with the lens. I hope to see you in your next trip to Puerto Rico.
Thanks for choosing Borikua Tours!

A million stars in the water

Wow! What an amazing experience this was. We were a group of 7 and were picked up from our rental home. They did manage to cram 5 more people in the van, so it was a pretty tight fit, and the AC int the back of the van didn’t work well at all until we were out of San Juan and moving quickly on the freeway. Our guide Steve was very informative about the local sights we passed, but sadly in the back two rows, we couldn’t hear anything at all. Luckily my brother was sitting in the front seat and provided us with a running text list of everything he was saying. He stopped once at a gas station so we could pee, upon request. Upon arriving at the dock, we were taken to a restaurant to enjoy our tacos (which he ordered while we used the facilities at our previous stop) The fish ones were great, but chicken was not a win according to everyone who ordered them. Then we had about 20 mins to run around and look at the shops (mostly jewelry- no shirts that I saw) buy one more drink, and hop on the boats. Happily they split our group of 12 into 2 boats so we got our own with just us 7. The first stop was a beautiful mangrove Island that we got to run around and explore (they had some OFF for us to use on request since we hadn’t thought to bring any, but bring some! You need it at sundown for sure!) and then after the sun set we went out into the bay and set anchor and swam for plenty of time. We went 3 days before a new moon and it was pretty dark but not pitch black. It rained pretty heavily on us as we went out (they let us store our dry stuff in a hatch) but it cleared up just as we parked. At first I was disappointed as we drove in because there was not a glowing blue trail behind us or anything that you could see from the boat, but once you jumped in the water (totally warm) and your eyes adjusted you could see the millions of sparkles, glittering like diamonds in the black water. I ran up to get my goggles and if you ducked your head under and moved your arms in front of you, it was like fireflies in the water. They passed out pool noodles if you needed or wanted one and everyone felt safe and secure. The best was to position yourself about 10-15 feet from everyone else and not move for a minute and then swoosh your hands through the water- it was so magical:)
A quick (and chilly) boat ride back to the dock and we were allowed to dry off and change (and pee!) and then we started the long trek back. Almost everyone fell asleep so it wasn’t too miserable. I would say a neck pillow would not be remiss... lol
Steve was super friendly and polite and we enjoyed him thoroughly.

Needs to be more transparent
SomhritaD
, Jun 2019
This was a surprisingly long drive etc. and the guides were never up front about what exactly we would do, what facilities would be available - what can be done if someone is not comfortable swimming. The car was uncomfortable. I asked for a life vest and was told I would get one at the bay - I did not. Also - not safe if someone is saying they are not a good swimmer - there are no 100% guarantees. The guides were not engaging about what is happening in the bay. I think the best way to see this would be staying overnight if the drives are 3 + hours.
Response from Host , Jun 2019
Hi Alysaia!
I completely agreed with you, needs to be more transparent. First you called at last minute and I found you and your husband a space for the same day. I explained the 2 hour driving (I verified the GPS, 2:13 including the bathroom stop at Penuelas city) and I told you we have available life vest and noodles. I told you was a festival at La Parguera and will be pack. I explain you by phone the whole tour before you gave me your credit card number.
The tour guide called as soon the group arrived at dock. He told me about your attitude and you refuse to swim because, as you wrote, you are not a good swimmer. You refuse to use the life vest because was dark. I spoke with the captain and he explained how rude you was at boat. Also I called the other 2 couples and they felt uncomfortable because you have an attitude and spoke and complain loud.
We work really hard for exceed all our guest expectations, reviews speak for us. As you wrote is no 100% guarantees and you are right, you are in the 1% unpleased. We pride are selves for being honest and explain all details about the tour and you as a customer are not, you made all of the rest of the uncomfortable. Maybe private tours are your best option.

If you can only do one thing in Puerto Rico, this should be it! The guides, boat captain, and tour company owner were all super friendly and knowledgeable. There was a surprise stop at a mangrove to swim in the clear water and walk around. And the bay!! I won't even try to describe it, because it's not possible. Magical experience with the luminous water and the bright stars overhead. We also did a glass bottom kayak tour in anther bay but swimming in La Parguera was so much more incredible!
Response from Host , Jun 2019
Thanks for this amazing review! Thanks for the recommendation. It is a privilege for us, consider your best day in Puerto Rico the day you were with us WOW. We work hard only for this, for give everyone the best and a memorable experience in their lives.
Next time try the cave tour, its awesome!
See you soon and thanks for choosing Borikua Tours,
