Your day trip from Hobart starts with the drive to Kettering, a coastal town where you’ll catch the ferry for the 15-minute cruise to Bruny Island. When you arrive, begin your exploration of the island’s culinary and natural highlights with a visit to the Neck, a narrow spit of land that links Bruny’s north and south sections. On the way, your guide points out oyster beds and farms that supply fresh items for the island’s popular food scene.
Throughout the day, you’ll sample an array of produce, sweets and other goods during visits to local purveyors. At the Bruny Island Berry Farm, enjoy morning tea, which may feature scones with berry jam. Chow down on a lunch of island dishes such as locally caught fish or Tasmanian beef or lamb at the beachside Hotel Bruny; taste artisanal cheese at Bruny Island Cheese Company; devour fresh oysters at Get Shucked; and savor smoked salmon at the Bruny Island Smoke House (BISH). To wash down these tasty treats, visit Bruny Island Premium Wines to sample chardonnay and pinot noir.
For more discovery of the island’s natural side, head to the Hummock and Adventure Bay lookouts for fabulous photo ops, and learn about the species of little penguins who nest nearby. You’ll also hear about Bruny’s Aboriginal history at the Truganini Memorial. Then journey along the Mount Mangana Trail and pass by Cloudy Bay on the way to Cape Bruny Lighthouse, and continue to Inala Private Reserve and the Jurassic Garden to observe and learn about the island’s plant and animal life, from orchids to wallabies.
When you return to Kettering on the ferry, visit Nutpatch Nougat Chocolates for tastings and a look at the chocolate-making process before heading back to Hobart, where your day trip concludes.
