The tour and tour guide was amazing. There were moments of laughter as he told a funny story. Moments of silence as he made us remember our great leaders. We learn so much !! Definitely a five star experience!

Seeing DC through the eyes of John was great!

This tour was awesome! John was so knowledgeable and passionate and it showed in this tour. We walked to some of the stops on our own the day before and doing it with a knowledgeable tour guide made the experience way better. I would definitely do it again minus the museum stop. I gave it 4 starts because we missed a few stops, the driver kept turning the air off and the museum entry was a bit disorganized. People in the front of the bus and the back of the bus received 2 different entry times. So some got to walk right in and some had to wait. I would definitely try to get my own entry tickets the next time. But overall it was worth it.

Our tour guide was an extraordinary historian. He shared so much of his life as a black man. We went into “the hood” as he described it. Told us about the two mayors of his city. They did good & some bad. I could go on & on about my experience. I’m only sorry I can’t remember this wonderful gentleman’s name. The American African Museum goes without saying is a profound experience.

Re-learning history and gaining a perspective

John, our guide, provided context and challenged us to think about the information and history at each site. For example, at the Lincoln Park statue of Lincoln before a kneeling African American man, he explained how funds were raised to commission the statue and the reaction of Frederick Douglass. He challenged us to evaluate whether it is demeaning in context. I have taken other tours which avoid history (during a different tour the guide actually avoided saying slavery was the reason for the Civil War) and really appreciated John's approach. Plus John is very personable so the entire tour enjoyable.
